About Johnny Depp
We could hear the cheering from Karratha LIA as Johnny Depp made his entrance at SAFE Karratha, we had to hold back the fans as they thought Jack Sparrow had arrived. They were right about the Pirate Patch, but it was our very own local celebrity.
Johnny has just joined us, and is a blank canvas and is waiting you for you to teach him the wonders of the world. He can be a bit shy around new people, but give him a bit of time (and lots of belly rubs) and he'll soon be your best friend. He loves kids and is super gentle with other animals, making friends easily at the park with dogs and people alike. Although he is a hound for attention and would prefer to be the only pet in your home and in your heart. And if it's alright with you, his favourite place to be will be on the couch cuddling up next to you and maybe trying to sneak in a few doggy kisses..
He's a curious boy with tons of energy and he still doesn't quite understand why he has to wear a leash on walks when all he wants to do is run free. But he is a quick learner and with consistent training he is learning to harness his inner pocket rocket tendencies to obeying commands like 'sit', 'down', 'stay' and even 'shake'.
He's not a huge fan of fetch or tug of war games but like many young dogs he has a love of chewing. After learning that thongs are not toys, his next favourite chew toy is a nice big coconut from off the tree. Chewing is one of the ways that young dogs learn about the world, but some enjoy it for a longer period than others. The best way to deal with this is tell him "no" if he's chewing something he shouldn't and give him a chew toy instead. Provide him with a range of chew toys that you can swap around so he doesn't get bored with them. He might try to nibble at your hands when you play with him but he's very gentle and only trying to play with you - again, saying no and switching out chew toys when he does this will teach him not to do this.
He is still a puppy so would do best with a human companion who can spend a lot of time with him and be attentive to his own doggy language and consistent with his training. He's really just a big softie with lots of love to give.
TRAINING A PUP
Want to know more about how you teach a pup to be a great dog? I'd like to do training every day so that I learn the commands of sit, stay, come, down, no, stop and leave it. And once I've learnt them, it's important for us to keep practicing them every day. Being consistent and clear with your boundaries will mean I always know the right way to behave. Getting out to exercise at least once a day (and twice for working dog breeds) is vital to stimulate my brain and body. It creates important opportunities for me to meet strangers, other dogs and other animals, plus it tires me out!
I CAN FLY TO PERTH!
Flying for a few hours is very important for animals in remote locations, because it gives us the opportunity to be adopted. Talk to SAFE about flying me to Perth for around $150 airfare.
