Big Ben is a high maintenance boy who has some very specific requirements from his new family to ensure he is the right fit. He is an extremely playful and energetic puppy in a giant doggy body.
He loves to chase his ball around the yard or play tug with his rope toys and will happily entertain himself outside and inside with a ball or any object he finds. Big Ben sleeps all night in his crate, happily sleeps for hours after a long walk and is great on a lead/harness although he is extremely strong and will pull when he sees another dog/cat/human.
He travels well in the car and loves to snuggle on the couch with his family. He is kid friendly but would suit older kids due to his size, playfulness and energy levels. He is an extremely strong boy and takes up a lot of room everywhere he goes including the couch or bed. Big Ben is cat friendly and plays well with other dogs but can get a bit rough while playing and needs to be told when to stop by the other dog or the humans.
Big Ben has had little to no training in his first 12 months of life and therefore is a large puppy with very little understanding of manners and appropriate behaviour. To add to this, he has major hearing loss which means that he is not able to be controlled with verbal commands or instructions. With no training and major hearing loss it makes it very hard to control Big Ben and almost impossible to get his attention. He has started to learn hand signals and is highly motivated to learn using food as a reward. Big Ben will require a great amount of time spent on training to ensure that he learns his manners and expectations which, over time, will benefit the whole family.
Big Ben loves to spend time with his family and will not suit a home where he is left alone for hours at a time as he has made a habit of escaping when by himself. He really needs to have another dog as a companion or a family that can be with him majority of the time as he will get into mischief if he is left alone. Which also leads me to his ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound (no I am not joking). Big Ben is very capable of jumping on cubby houses, benches, camper trailers, boats and reception desks with little effort and if the motivation is high enough, like being left alone, he may jump higher to get out.
Please understand that Big Ben is going to be a challenge in many ways and requires a family that has an extensive understanding of how to train a dog with special needs and also has the time and willingness to set Big Ben up for success.
Big Ben is such a sweet and gentle natured boy with such a zest for life. He is a very lovable goofball and with a significant amount of time, patience and dedication to training he will become a devoted and loyal member of your family. His adoption fee reflects the commitment required to help Big Ben succeed.
