About Hunter
Hunter came to us from SAFE Broome. They didn't have any carers available, and the Rangers said he was too lovely a dog to sit in the pound, so he was flown to us in Perth.
We don't know exactly what breed he is, but wouldn't be surprised if there was Whippet in there somewhere because of his body shape and how fast he can run. He's lanky, but not very large--weighing in at under 17kg. His beautiful brindle coat is ever so soft, and he doesn't appear to shed much.
When we picked him up at the airport, he was so scared of everything new he just huddled in his crate, and wouldn't even come out. But with regular exercise, good food, and lots of love, he's showing his true colours. He's a very interesting mix of adult dog and puppy behaviours.
Like a puppy he still wants to CHEW everything, so guard your slippers because he just can't help himself. Give him lots of chew toys and he'll happily chew those instead...at least until they're completely destroyed :) He's been friendly with EVERY dog he's met at the beach and the dog park (easily over 50 already), and he loves to play with dogs of all sizes. He's very polite in his greetings--he doesn't jump on them until after they've had a proper sniff and the other dog has indicated they want to play too. Occasionally at home he get the 'Zoomies' where he tears around the place at top speed, and if he's bored he's been known to dig a little in the garden.
But like an adult he's calm and quiet most of the time. He doesn't even bark when the doorbell rings, or when new people come over. He's only barked ONCE, and that was when a tradesman came in carrying a ladder. He'd met the same tradesman earlier without the ladder and didn't bark then.
He had a little growl when he encountered our neighbours' 2 toddlers in the street, so we expect he hasn't interacted with young ones before, but he's been fine in the park with children over 10. He does have a bit of separation anxiety, so we think best suited to a home with another dog, or where his people aren't away too many hours at a time.
Hunter does a lovely sit, and although we've not had him off-lead yet, his recall on a long lead is good. Our impression is that he hasn't been mis-treated, but most likely ignored and never really trained or loved. He loves hanging out with his humans, and is still learning how to play with toys. Although he's not currently living with a cat, he has been minded once by a neighbours with a big cat. He barked at the cat when he first saw it, but once the cat hissed at him, Hunter backed off and left it alone. They shared the house all afternoon with no issues.
Hunter has just been desexed. We will screen applications and identify an adopter, but he will not be released to his new home until after April 5 when his stitches come out.
