About Pammy
Pammy is a small to medium size greyhound, around 26 kilos and approx 4.5 years old. She was a very nervous and insecure girl when she came to live with us a month ago, but she's really coming out of her shell and is learning to love being a pet. She is very affectionate and loves cuddles and ear scratches, and now greets us in the morning with a very waggy tail and lots of playful twirling and stamping in true grey style! After some initial barking she now settles very well at night, and sleeps quietly on her bed in a separate room to her humans; however if no one has surfaced by her breakfast time she will remind us with lots of singing and squeaking.
Pammy has not yet ventured onto the couch or our bed but loves to be in the same room as her humans and will snooze happily on one of her beds or even just the the floor near us. She has responded very well to a routine; she has a cup of kibble around 7.30-8am followed by a walk; another cup of kibble and walk around 4.30-5pm, and then a short walk to have a last pee before bed (we live in a unit so no garden), around 10pm although she's fine to go later. In between times she just hangs out (she will follow me round the house nosing about while I cook and do chores), snoozes, and plays with her toys. She is very food motivated so it's best to keep tempting human food away from the edge of benches or the table - however she isn't pushy and while she'll have an initial sniff, she knows she's not allowed to take things and will settle down happily in her bed while we eat.
She is very happy to meet new people and will go straight to them for pats and scratches. She does like children but she gets quite over-excited around young noisy kids. She has shown some strong guarding tendencies, and while this is improving, it's still definitely something to watch out for; she will now often drop something if asked, but it's important not to try and take things from her directly but ask her to drop or distract her with something nice (cheese!) in exchange instead. She also has a strong sleep startle reflex; I believe this will recede as she feels safer and more confident, but always make sure she's awake by calling her before you touch her when she's snoozing. For these reasons she'd be much better suited to a home with adults or older children who can understand and keep this in mind.
She has often been left in the house for a morning or afternoon at a time and has shown no signs of separation anxiety, although she's always very excited when someone comes back!
She is not fully tested with cats but shows a keen interest in them when walking so may not be cat-friendly. She is interested in, but also wary of, other dogs and strongly dislikes off-lead dogs running up to her; with time she may become more relaxed with further careful socialisation and training. I have not seen her in the company of another greyhound as yet.
She generally walks well and doesn't pull, although sometimes has some stops and starts as she is not keen on traffic and loud noises; she has a clear idea of where she likes to go and will sometimes just stop dead if we try to take her in another direction! This is improving with gentle reassurance and the application of treats where necessary. She went from being utterly frozen on the stairs to happily trotting up and down in less than a week; she's a fast learner and is very keen to please.
All up she is a darling girl with a curious, easy-going and loving nature, and she asks very little of her humans other than to be safe, comfy, and very much loved. She will make a wonderful pet for someone who can give her the stability and company she needs.
