About Hudson
*ON TRIAL* Hudson has the most soulful, intelligent eyes. He is an affectionate and loyal dog with great depth of character and incredible smarts.
To strangers, this adorable boy is quietly affectionate. Polite and unobtrusive, yet lovingly engaged. To his special people he is unsurpassed in loyalty and just wants to be by their side. He is bound to his people by an invisible leash and for a dog with no prior training, he shows a fascinating aptitude to follow direction without straying.
There is a sad longing that can be detected in his gaze, at times, if you dare to stare long enough. This adorable guy has sadly failed to have his needs met for the first seven years of his life. He looks forward to being part of a family who will go above and beyond to compensate for the next seven. A family who will erase that mournful glint forever.
We recognise that it may not be easy to find Hudson’s perfect match as he does have a foible requiring careful management.
All though for the most part, Hudson co-exists perfectly well with his canine associates (though he’s more interested in herding them than anything else), he cannot be trusted 100%.
It may only be one in a hundred dogs Hudson reacts to, but that hundredth dog may incur damage, as this boy does not understate his messages. Attacks can be unprovoked and entail little warning.
We want to make it clear. There is NO relationship between dog aggression and human aggression in most dogs and Hudson has shown great affection for people and excellent tolerance for excess handling.
Anyone who gets this boy will be lucky to have him. To have Hudson in your home is like having another, quiet, undemanding human around. He is very special and has shown unrivalled intelligence. If you wanted to dabble in the Obedience ring I have no doubt you’d win every ribbon.
One day, I was bundling the dogs into the back of the van, all of them leashed and directed, bar Hudson who would wait untethered in the back ground for his ‘in’ command after they’d all been loaded. On this day I completely forgot about him. Immersed in thought, I shut the rear doors and absentmindedly took a seat in the driver’s side. A lesser dog would have been backed into or left behind, but not Hudson.
I turned on the engine and as I went to shut the driver’s side door Hudson took a flying leap over my lap and sat in the passenger side seat staring at me like I was insane. He’d never been in the front of the van before. Prior to coming here he was terrified of being in the van at all. Yet quick as a flash, there he was, delivering a sobering message with his eyes about the importance of being present.
From that day on, when I told Hudson ‘in’ he would run to the front of the van to be let in instead. I let him ride there. After all, he’d more than earned his co-pilot position.

Adoption details
Please tell us about yourself using the orange ‘enquire about this pet’ button below. We do not operate on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Instead, our aim is to find the most suitable forever home for the animals in our care.
Your application should include details about who lives at your home, both humans and animals and what their daily schedules and living arrangements are like. It should include details about your previous dogs and a thorough break down of the house rules you will have for this pet as well as what their typical day will look like.
Please tell us what your dog’s sleeping arrangements will be as well as what you plan to do with your dog if you go away on holidays.
Please provide AS MUCH detail as possible to increase your chances of a successful application.
It may take up to four weeks to process the applications. Please try to be patient. All applicants will receive a response - but it won’t be an immediate one.
If your application seems promising you will be contacted for a telephone interview. Should this be successful you will be invited to a meet and greet and asked to send photos of your property.
Should the meet and greet end favourably, you may pay the adoption fee, sign the paperwork and take the pet on a two week trial during which time you will be asked to provide regular updates.
During this trial period the pet remains the property of Onyx Rescue and adoption will only be finalised following a successful trial.

AN OPEN LETTER TO APPLICANTS:
We hate to disappoint people. It’s something that really upsets us, but unfortunately it comes with the territory of what we do. So we want to take the time to explain something.
When we take on a dog, we make a commitment both to that dog and the former owners of that dog to find this fur-kid their perfect forever home. Our primary criterion in order to achieve this is whether that home is a good match for that dog. Each dog can have vastly different needs from the next and every home is different.
Sometimes well-intentioned people put their friends in touch with us, sometimes we are approached by friends or even family in relation to a particular dog. However, we have made a promise not to compromise on our commitment and we have to turn them down.
This isn’t a reflection of their dog ownership skills, nor how we feel about them personally. Our decision will always come down to whether we believe that they are a match. Not just any match - the best match.
Sometimes we are lucky to have several interested parties who would be a good match and it can be difficult to choose between them. Our ultimate decision will, however, not be influenced by our relationship with this potential adopter, be it secondary or primary, nor the number of times they have applied and missed out previously, nor whether they applied first, nor the number of times or methods used to contact us about a particular pet, but whether or not they are the BEST match available.
So if you know someone who is interested in any of the dogs at Onyx Rescue, or you are interested in one yourself, please go through the proper channels and send your application through Petrescue. Please do not take offence if you or your friends are not chosen - this only means that there was someone who was a better match. Not a better person, not a better dog owner, but a better match.
We believe there is a home for every dog and a dog for every home, so if you’ve not been chosen previously please do not give up applying - the next one may be your perfect dog.
