About Cashew
*ON TRIAL* Cashew is such an incredibly cute little man, with his diminutive size, his stubby little legs and his comical bat ears, that you’re powerless to do anything but cradle him like a baby and smother him with annoying mummy kisses. We’re not sure who named him, but his resemblance to this nut is both uncanny and too cute for words.
Once Cashew, a 13 month old Chihuahua, gets to know you, he loves nothing more than lying in your arms receiving those annoying mummy kisses and will squint his eyes with bliss.
With strangers however, this boy can be a bit hand-shy. This is generally when people who want to greet him are standing up and leaning over him. When you’re this pint sized, human giants can seem pretty scary.
If you’re a stranger who is sitting, however, Cashew loves nothing more than laying in your lap for snuggles.
Much of Cashew’s background is unknown, however, he was not in a good psychological state when he arrived at Onyx Rescue. This poor boy had so many fears and phobias. From putting on his leash, to greeting other dogs, to even being touched at all. He was ruled by terror a would spend much of his time running, shrieking and urinating on himself.
When he slipped his lead on the first day (all he wanted was to run from people) we had half the neighbourhood in car, bike and on foot attempting to catch him. It was a long and terrifying process for this once timid kid.
A few weeks on and this little boy is unrecognisable. We have fortunately been successful in chipping away at his torment to chisel out the magnificent creature inside. He has come such a long way and is a testament to the resilience of the canine spirit. Cashew wanders around with his tail up, confidently and pursues his special person for affection and play. It was hard to remember that he’s still really just a pup, when he came in so burdened and serious.
Now that his demons have fled, he will enthusiastically pursue a gentle game of handsies with his special person, snuffle his toys about and play a little game of chasey with the other dogs. Gentle is a good word to sum this little one up. Gentle, kind, loving and loyal.
He may always be a little cautious of encroaching strangers, like many of his ilk, or in the right environment with enough positive exposure and encouragement he may continue to blossom.
We are looking for a special person who can nurture his beautiful spirit and accompany him closely throughout his life journey. A life journey, that at just 13 months of age, is really just embarking.
You will be rewarded with up to twenty long Chihuahua years of absolute loyalty and unconditional love. Love manifested demonstrably in kisses, snuggles and play. This little boy is so, so precious and endearing that he will only go to a very special home who will not ever take him for granted or allow him to slip into the psychological torment that he has left behind.
Do you think you have what it takes to shower this boy with daily affection and love? To take him on frequent adventures, keep up his socialisation with strange dogs and people and to support and treasure him for the rest of his days?
If so, Cashew has been waiting his whole life to make your acquaintance and eagerly anticipates your application. Please see the application instructions below.
Medical notes
Cashew is a very healthy young boy.

Adoption details
Please tell us about yourself using the orange ‘enquire about this pet’ button below. We do not operate on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Instead, our aim is to find the most suitable forever home for the animals in our care.
Your application should include details about who lives at your home, both humans and animals and what their daily schedules and living arrangements are like. It should include details about your previous dogs and a thorough break down of the house rules you will have for this pet as well as what their typical day will look like.
Please tell us what your dog’s sleeping arrangements will be as well as what you plan to do with your dog if you go away on holidays.
Please provide AS MUCH detail as possible to increase your chances of a successful application.
It may take up to four weeks to process the applications. Please try to be patient. All applicants will receive a response - but it won’t be an immediate one.
If your application seems promising you will be contacted for a telephone interview. Should this be successful you will be invited to a meet and greet and asked to send photos of your property.
Should the meet and greet end favourably, you may pay the adoption fee, sign the paperwork and take the pet on a two week trial during which time you will be asked to provide regular updates.
During this trial period the pet remains the property of Onyx Rescue and adoption will only be finalised following a successful trial.

AN OPEN LETTER TO APPLICANTS:
We hate to disappoint people. It’s something that really upsets us, but unfortunately it comes with the territory of what we do. So we want to take the time to explain something.
When we take on a dog, we make a commitment both to that dog and the former owners of that dog to find this fur-kid their perfect forever home. Our primary criterion in order to achieve this is whether that home is a good match for that dog. Each dog can have vastly different needs from the next and every home is different.
Sometimes well-intentioned people put their friends in touch with us, sometimes we are approached by friends or even family in relation to a particular dog. However, we have made a promise not to compromise on our commitment and we have to turn them down.
This isn’t a reflection of their dog ownership skills, nor how we feel about them personally. Our decision will always come down to whether we believe that they are a match. Not just any match - the best match.
Sometimes we are lucky to have several interested parties who would be a good match and it can be difficult to choose between them. Our ultimate decision will, however, not be influenced by our relationship with this potential adopter, be it secondary or primary, nor the number of times they have applied and missed out previously, nor whether they applied first, nor the number of times or methods used to contact us about a particular pet, but whether or not they are the BEST match available.
So if you know someone who is interested in any of the dogs at Onyx Rescue, or you are interested in one yourself, please go through the proper channels and send your application through Petrescue. Please do not take offence if you or your friends are not chosen - this only means that there was someone who was a better match. Not a better person, not a better dog owner, but a better match.
We believe there is a home for every dog and a dog for every home, so if you’ve not been chosen previously please do not give up applying - the next one may be your perfect dog.
Thank-you to everyone who supports what we do here - it means the world to us and the beautiful fur-kids seeking homes.
