About Cherry
This dear little girl is looking for a home with a lovely friendly dog to play with, and gentle natured human(s) to love and care for her. She is on the smaller side of medium, with a very sensitive nature, and is a dog who really wants to please. If she understands what is being asked of her she will surely oblige. Cherry doesn't need treats, just praise and pats and she will do her best for you. She is great with playing with the youngsters on our doggy team, but also enjoys quiet time by herself. She is often to be found curled up quietly for a snooze on her foster carer's bed, where she feels secure and safe. Up until recently she has been walking out on a lead, which she does very well, but as her confidence has grown we have let her have some off-lead time on her bush walks and she is doing great. Just recently she has started playing with the toys as well.
Cherry had a really rough time before she came to us. She was barely 6 months old, rake thin, and starving, and on the streets of Tennant Creek alone trying to look after herself, afraid of everyone and everything. The local animal management officer caught her with a catch pole, and impounded her. She just shrank away in the back of her kennel and wet herself in fear there when anyone came near her. We found a foster home for her by herself initially and her carers did such a great job. Then she came to Elliott to integrate with the other dogs and gain confidence. That transition was hard for her as she was very timid with dogs. Initially she was kept with the puppies who she loved and who loved her. Then gradually she was introduced to the older dogs one by one. Then in small groups supervised closely. Eventually she has fully integrated and is just a regular part of the team and even a preferred playmate of the youngsters. Cherry has come such a long way, and has vindicated all the people who were determined to help her. She is a lovely little dog who will go on to have a wonderful life we are sure.
Our rescue and rehabilitation work happens in Central Australia, but because of the scarcity of adopters locally, our re-homing operation is in South Australia. Cherry's adoption fee includes crate hire, courier transport by road from Tennant Creek to Alice Springs, and a direct flight from Alice Springs to Adelaide. Cherry is currently in foster care in Elliott NT.
Medical notes
About a month ago we started Cherry on a low dose of anti-depressants just to help her with her residual anxiety. She has responded brilliantly. The plan is to keep her on this for 6 months, then gradually wean her off them when she is settled in her new home and routine. It is important that she gets these tablets reliably as stopping them abruptly could make her feel worse than ever. She will come with 4 months supply of these tablets, which will take her through to the point where she can wean off under vet supervision.
