About Ruby
Hi! My name is Ruby and I’m looking for my furever family 🧡 I’m approx 2-3 years old and haven’t had the greatest start to life. I was quite standoffish when I came to my foster home, but quickly adjusted to my foster parents. Once I realised I wasn’t going to get hurt by a human ever again, I’ve discovered love, cuddles and pats are pretty darn awesome!
I need to be introduced very slowly and gently to any other doggies, as I’m very wary of newbies. I bark, growl and bare my teeth quite aggressively, but I haven’t bitten anyone. I would do best in a single doggie home, or with an older, calm & reserved dog who won’t pester me. I’ve made 2 new friends already in my doggie foster sister, Sadie, and a playful labrador who visits each week. I’m still a bit wary of the lab as he’s quite boisterous, and I’m only just learning now to play with Sadie. When the other dogs are playing, I’ll often be found sitting on the outskirts of the fun under the picnic table. Im not a fan of my other foster doggie sister Ella, I’m not sure why as she’s reserved too, but we can’t all be friends with everyone. I’m quite reserved but also very protective of Jet, who I was rescued with. Sadie is teaching me to play chasey but I’m selective to when this happens. Im still learning that toys are to be played with, they’re still a foreign thing for me. I ignore that they exist mostly! Im especially spooked by sticks though, I don’t yet understand or trust that a stick is no longer a weapon but something to chase. I slink away when one is picked up in my vicinity but watch warily when Sadie runs after them.
As I had no name and no basic training when I was rescued in mid Sept 2018, these are areas I’m needing more time and training in. I would benefit greatly from a doggie trainer when I get to my new home. I am slowly learning my name, to sit, and to walk nicely on a lead. I’ve been known to wrap my foster parents legs up in a nice mess with my lead! I do tend to listen and respond better to my foster Dad, particularly when I first arrived here, but have learnt my foster Mum can be boss too. I am dominant at meal times, and have had to be seperated from other dogs to eat.
I do quite well with routine, I know when dinner is being prepared and will hover patiently in my separate dinner area. I also can be found waiting at the gate, ready for my lead to be put on so I can go to bed. I sleep quietly in my safe indoor space for 10hours overnight and I haven’t had any wee or poo accidents in there yet.
Children are quite alien to me I would do well in a home with children who are dog confident and perhaps older than 10, particularly because I do jump up. I will bark at new people, but once I learn who you are, I’ll stop my barking and greet you with a tail wag and a jump up cuddle instead!. I actually try and wrap my front legs and paws around you and hate to break out of the hug!
I need to be kept in a secure yard, and when I’m not, I need to be on a lead, and I’m learning quite well on a pressure lead. A few weeks ago, I snuck out the dog yard gate and ran across our property but got distracted by smells before I snuck under the fence and my foster Mum got my lead on. My recall is not great, it’s improving notably, however keep in mind the above re slowly learning my name!
I’m also used to seeing sheep, goats and chickens through the dog yard fence, I only bark at one of the goats occasionally, but he teases me!
Lastly, I haven’t yet gone walking on my lead in a public place, that is something I will be encountering over the next few days/weeks.
I can be a hard nut to crack but once you do, you’ll have my complete love and attention. I’m nervously looking forward to meeting my new potential family!
