About Helix ~ purebred papillon (pending adopt 24/11/18)
Helix is a delightful and active 2 yo, male, purebred papillon. He is very intelligent and food motivated and loves to learn new tricks. He will do anything for roast chicken! His favourite things to do are playing with toys, learning to do tricks, lazing in the sun and sniffing in the yard.
Helix needs a quiet, peaceful and caring family who can provide a consistent environment to allow him to come out of his shell. He is not suitable for a family with young children. He has anxiety and prefers the simple life of staying home and sniffing around his garden. He needs a well fenced yard with no small gaps. He doesn't jump or dig.
Helix likes to go for a walk but becomes anxious when he sees other dogs and will bark at them to tell them to go away. He is okay one on one with other small dogs and could live with another friendly dog once he gets to know them. He has a tendency to bark at pocket pets. Helix travels well in the car and enjoys being able to look out the window.
Helix is trained to use a wee mat inside but would prefer to go outside if he has access. He hasn’t tried a doggy door but with a little training he would be fine. Helix has attended puppy preschool and had private dog training lessons and knows the following commands: sit, touch (two fingers), drop/chillax, go to bed, high five, shake, dance, stand, off, twirl, come (unreliable so we often use touch instead), give (working on, needs improvement), speak, quiet, go find it (in relation to sniffing for treats), look look look (as a positive interrupter for undesired behaviour such as barking). We have also started working on the commands give (give toy/item up) and remain (don’t touch a toy).
Helix sleeps in a dog bed inside but would happily sleep on your bed given the chance. He feels the cold so needs to sleep indoors. His beautiful soft coat requires daily brushing and regular bathing. He is fine to be left inside by himself with his toys.
Helix can be a bit protective of special items he might find (pegs, socks, paper, small toys etc) and would benefit from ongoing training on this. Sometimes he objects to having his harness put on and might snap. He needs someone who will be very gentle and patient and never, ever punish or be harsh with him for any reason. Someone experienced with dogs is preferred. Helix is smart and needs mental stimulation such as a variety of toys, interaction with familiar people, and time spent doing fun training.
Helix weighs just under 4kg and is very quick and moves very quietly. He is a gorgeous dog who prefers to be indoors near people but would love to have access to outdoors whenever he pleases.
This gorgeous boy is looking for his forever home because his current family are unable to care for him due to family circumstances.
