About Sooty ~ Silky Terrier x, senior (Trial 26/10/18)
Sooty, 10yo, female, Silky Terrier x is a very easy girl to have around. All she asks is to be allowed inside to keep you company and cuddle up close when you sit down. She has a snuggly round dog bed that she adores and she is happy to go there when you're busy or not home. She will be bringing it with her to her forever home.
Some of her favourite activities are running around in the garden, sunbaking, going for little walks around the neighbourhood, and going for trips in the car. In cool weather she likes to curl up under a blanket.
Sooty is in foster carer with three other small dogs and she is fine with them as long as they don't pester her too much. She will growl at them to tell them to mind their manners but that's all. She doesn't choose to play with them as she is more people focused. She hasn't been exposed to cats. She's not interested in the chickens in their backyard hen house. She is housetrained.
Sooty would suit a home where there is someone who doesn't work full time. She's fine home alone and doesn't bark but I'm sure she would prefer not to be without human company for a full day. She would be well suited to an active retiree or someone who works from home or part time.
She is lovely with respectful children visitors but she wouldn't be suited to live with them because, being a mature lady, she prefers a more sedate lifestyle.
Sooty came to Dog Rescue Newcastle along with two other small dogs. They had been owned by a woman with dementia who hadn't been looking after them well for a long time. Family stepped in and surrendered the dogs to DRN. All three dogs were in poor condition, one of them so bad that he died shortly after coming into care. One has been adopted. Sooty had a very bad skin condition resulting in black, leathery skin on her back. It took a couple of months of medicated baths and tablets to clear it up but she still has a small patch of missing fur. After her skin was healthy it was time for surgery to correct slipping knee caps in both her hind legs. She accepted all the vet treatments without any fuss. I think she was just grateful for the attention and to be feeling better.
That was a couple of months ago and now she is running around as happy as can be. Care needs to be taken though that she doesn't jump on or off furniture. Her carer has provided her with a little step to enable her to do it safely. Sooty has no problem with two steps to go into the back garden but she shouldn't go to a home with any more than a couple of steps to the outdoors.
Sooty has been in care for five months getting lots of TLC but now she is ready for her forever home. She is bonded with her foster carer so may be a bit lost for a few days when she first goes to her new home, but with some love and patience she will soon settle in and be a great joy to have around. Small dogs like her typically live to around 15 years old, so she still has lots of years and one-third of her life to share with someone special.
Sooty has a scruffy but soft coat which is low shedding so she doesn't drop fur around the house. But she does need regular brushing (every few days depending on length), bathing (every few weeks) and clipping (every 6 to 8 weeks) to keep her comfortable and beautiful.
Sooty is an inside dog and needs to be allowed access to inside at all times and to sleep inside, preferably in a person's bedroom. If your looking for a little friend then please consider Sooty.
