About Nero
*ON TRIAL* As a long-time fan of sharp and driven working dogs, never once would I have dreamed that a little, thirteen-year-old Toy Poodle could capture my heart so completely.
Nero’s elderly owners were no longer able to take care of him so they rang the pound, who in turn directed them to Onyx Rescue. I wish I could thank whomever was working at the pound that day, for giving this little darling the chance he deserves.
It’s been a long road to recovery for this little man, who had the worst teeth I’ve ever seen. Add to that a broken jaw via surgical complication, severe arthritis and chronic canine bronchitis, on top of his advanced years, and I wondered at times whether he would make it.
However, following a myriad of treatments and a lot of tender loving care, a recent blood test revealed absolutely perfect results and his ailments are now entirely managed with half a tablet a day.
Although he has just turned thirteen and may not have the hearing and eyesight of a younger dog, Nero is sharp of mind, full of character and so incredibly devoted to his special person. That person, right now, is me.
Nero follows me around wherever I go and just wants to be with me. He will take a pat from a stranger but his eyes never stray much from mine. Had I a lifestyle conducive to the level of attention this boy deserves he would be mine in a heartbeat. Alas, there are other dogs who take up my time. This darling needs a home where his loyalty and adoration can be reciprocated with generous portions of affection and companionship.
This little guy can be so quirky at times. Beware those with a floordrobe rather than a wardrobe, this fellow will stockpile your socks in his bed to sleep on. He has a special toy that he likes to carry about the place proudly and he sleeps with this at night. If you go near his food when his eating he will issue the most outlandish, gummy threat. I’m not sure he realises he doesn’t have many teeth left.
At the park he follows me around fervently, stopping occasionally to gently snuffle the grass or wag his tail at a new doggy friend. If his new associates are too determined in their playful requests he will tell them in no uncertain terms to be on their way, however. This usually works, as there’s nothing like high pitch swearing from a tiny fluffball to put you off your game and indeed some of the big, burly boys here often tiptoe around this slumbering beast of dominant doggy doom.
Nero, my heart cries for your tiny little heartbeat to find a home so deserving of you and your unwavering loyalty. A warm lap that you can lay your head upon until your last sigh of devoted breath. A place so filled with love that it is worth every moment of your fight for survival.
I will miss you, my ever-present friend and your gorgeous little tail wags each time I address you. I know your last home is out there and you will make someone so happy for the time you have left.
If you think you’re the one Nero’s been fighting for, please see the application instructions below.
Medical notes
Nero takes half a tablet of steroids a day to help with his arthritis and keep his cough at bay.

Adoption details
Please email us a little bit about yourself. We do not operate on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Instead, our aim is to find the most suitable forever home for the animals in our care.
Your email should include details about who lives at your home, both humans and animals and what their daily schedules and living arrangements are like. It should include details about your previous dogs and a thorough break down of the house rules you will have for this pet as well as what their typical day will look like.
It may take a couple of weeks to process the applications. Please try to be patient. All applicants will receive a response - but it may not be an immediate one.
If your application seems promising you will be contacted for a telephone interview. Should this be successful you will be invited to a meet and greet and asked to send photos of your property.
Should the meet and greet end favourably, you may pay the adoption fee, sign some paperwork and take the pet on a two week trial during which time you will be asked to provide regular updates.
During this trial period the pet remains the property of Onyx Rescue and adoption will only be finalised following a successful trial.

AN OPEN LETTER TO APPLICANTS:
We hate to disappoint people. It’s something that really upsets us, but unfortunately it comes with the territory of what we do. So we want to take the time to explain something.
When we take on a dog, we make a commitment both to that dog and the former owners of that dog to find this fur-kid their perfect forever home. Our primary criterion in order to achieve this is whether that home is a good match for that dog. Each dog can have vastly different needs from the next and every home is different.
Sometimes well-intentioned people put their friends in touch with us, sometimes we are approached by friends or even family in relation to a particular dog. However, we have made a promise not to compromise on my commitment and we have to turn them down.
This isn’t a reflection of their dog ownership skills, nor how we feel about them personally. Our decision will always come down to whether we believe that they are a match. Not just any match - the best match.
Sometimes we are lucky to have several interested parties who would be a good match and it can be difficult to choose between them. Our ultimate decision will, however, not be influenced by our relationship with this potential adopter, be it secondary or primary, nor the number of times they have applied and missed out previously, nor whether they applied first, nor the number of times or methods used to contact us about a particular pet, but whether or not they are the BEST match available.
So if you know someone who is interested in any of the dogs at Onyx Rescue, or you are interested in one yourself, please go through the proper channels and send your application through Petrescue. Please do not take offence if you or your friends are not chosen - this only means that there was someone who was a better match. Not a better person, not a better dog owner, but a better match.
We believe there is a home for every dog and a dog for every home, so if you’ve not been chosen previously please do not give up applying - the next one may be your perfect dog.
Thank-you to everyone who supports what we do here - it means the world to us and the beautiful fur-kids seeking homes.
