About Riley
Riley I Alaskan Malamute I Male I 2 year old
Riley was seized from his previous family due to welfare concerns. Poor Riley was starved and neglected, only weighing 24kg which is severely underweight as he is much taller than the average Malamute.
Riley is now on the road to recovery and he is much happier since arriving in our care, running around, enjoying a cuddle and having a brush. He is happy indoors and outdoors, has basic obedience and is toilet trained. He has even had his first run in harness at a sled dog event and took to it naturally!
Riley is very happy to be with you and can tend to be vocal when first separated, however he quickly settles down and sleep outside as long as he can be next to the house.
We've been able to brush the knots out of his tail and trim his nails which he tolerated without any problem, in fact he quite enjoys being brushed. He is getting 3 to 4 meals daily and this will be ongoing for sometime, so he will remain on hold until he is back to normal weight for a Malamute of his size and has had further veterinary follow up.
Having been starved and in an emaciated condition, he prioritises food very highly so is being trained not to snatch at food and to wait to be given the command to eat, however he is a quick learner and is progressing well. Food is definitely a great motivator for training for this big fellow!
Despite what he has been through, he is a very strong, active dog who will need an owner who is prepared to spend time doing activities with him. As with all Malamutes he will require strong, 6 foot high fencing and must always be waked on lead.
We will update his profile once he is ready to be adopted.
