About Devlyn ~ Dalmatian (on trial 25/9/2018)
Hi, I'm Devlyn and I'm a very special 11 week old female Dalmatian puppy. As you can see from my photos I am adorable - I love to play and I’m bubbling with personality. I have a very special quality as I'm deaf. My deafness doesn't dampen my free-spirited zest for life and it makes me even more adorable in my innocence. I am currently looking for a wonderful family who can commit to the extra training and care that deaf dogs like me need over our lifetime.
I’m a little explorer who loves adventuring and checking out new places. I’m confident when meeting new people and new dogs - I get along with everyone. I’m so playful that I can sometimes get a little carried away with a rough game - I love children but need to be supervised as I have very sharp little puppy teeth! I am very sight-driven due to my deafness so I’m a little too interested in birds, pocket pets and cats so I’m best suited to a home without them (I can’t hear cats hiss at me to stay away so I may get scratched).
I love people so much - I adore snuggling with them on the lounge and I really dislike being isolated or left alone - deaf puppies like me are even more reliant on companionship than regular hearing puppies. I can easily feel isolated in my silent world if I don’t have human or canine friends around.
I'm in foster care with a few dogs and I love playing with them. Because of my deafness other dogs can find my enthusiasm and love for them annoying as I can miss their social queues when they want a break from play. I need to be adopted by a family with a calm, tolerant and playful dog/s who don’t mind if I'm in-their-face with friendliness and game playing. I won't do well in a single dog family sorry as I love to follow other dogs - I'm simply not confident in my silent world without a dog pal.
My perfect family would be one with a couple who understand the long-term training and socialisation requirements of adopting a very cuddly and deaf dog. I am never allowed off lead when we are out as it's too dangerous for me - I can't hear cars and you can't call me back.
Although I'm just a baby I'm ready to start learning basic sign language like Good Girl, Look-at-me, Come, Sit and Stay. I'm learning to have good eye contact and to watch my foster family's faces. Learning to look at my family for guidance is very important for my sign language training and for my long term communication and social skills. I’m mostly house trained and rarely have accidents once I’m familiar with a new environment. I am an inside puppy and must be allowed inside with my family when they are at home – even when I’m older.
For more information on Devlyn and her special life-long requirements, please contact Claire on email claire.pleym@gmail.com . Devlyn is in foster care near Thornton , NSW (Newcastle area) and is only available for adoption to the Sydney, Central Coast and Newcastle areas as she must be returned for desexing when she’s around 5-6 months of age. Devlyn is not available for interstate or long distance adoption.
Devlyn’s adoption fee is $600 and includes her desexing, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments and micro chipping. You can see all our available dogs at www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au
Medical notes
Devlyn is deaf and therefore needs a committed and loving family who will focus on the special training requirements of a deaf dog.
Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can answer your questions and will ask you about the sort of home you are offering and may ask you to fill in our Adoption Questionnaire. Word format:
https://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/adoptionquestionnaire.docx
or PDF: https://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/adoptionquestionnaire.pdf
(2) If the questionnaire is approved you can arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. We will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
