About Hazel
Hazel is a stunning boy, with a super soft coat and big, brown, hazel eyes to melt your heart. This boy hasn't had the best start to life. We're unsure what kind of a home he came from, but he was dumped at the pound and has had a bit of mental trauma. His owner had tried to bond him with another rabbit, and following dodgy internet advice on dating, has done a lot of damage. Sadly, something we see often. Hazel lacks socialisation, and has been left timid and traumatised. He shows his insecurity and timid nature through being defensive. This does not mean he wouldn't benefit from a bunny partner, it just means that it's more important than ever to follow our bonding advice, so he doesn't have to go through another bad experience that will set him back. It also means he should only bond with a female rabbit, instead of a male.
Given Hazel's many months of waiting at a pound without getting adopted, he is obviously very used to dogs, and seeks them out for companionship here at the rescue. He is easy to hold, really enjoys pats and cuddles, however is not suitable for children or first time owners. During his weeks here getting temperament tested, we've really enjoyed Hazel and seeing daily improvements in his personality. His first response is to be timid, and then become territorial. Although he has lunged and grunted, he's never bitten, and we haven't tried to escalate the situation. With time, he has come to realise that having us in his enclosure means lots of pats and good things, however we still have to distract him with pats while we pick up any of his toys, take his litter out, etc. So long as he's getting pats he closes his eyes and enjoys the massage. He is very well litter trained and clean, even if he does enjoy tearing up some cardboard boxes, and has a morning binky and zoomies work out.
Hazel is looking for stability, so he can grow and trust. He is an amazing boy, who is sensitive and has a lot of love to give.
