About Max (AV1032)
Hi there, my name is Max.
I'm a big handsome boy who is a huge softy and loves hugs and attention.
Now there's some things for me to get out of the way. I'm not going to lie, my previous home wasn't that great. No one hit me or abused me but I was really quite neglected. I came into care with fly bites all over my ears and a dirty, matted coat. I wasn't sterilised and hadn't had my vaccinations.
I've mostly been kept outdoors and never really been included as part of a family, so I would love a new home where I will be treasured and treated like one of the gang.
I might need a little bit of time to get the hang of house-training because I've never been taught it, but I'm a smart boy and a quick learner so that shouldn't be a drama.
Now, you might have been attracted to me by my good looks and fancy breeding but it's important that you know a bit about my breed.
Maremmas are sheep dogs but we're not like border collies who round up the sheep - no, we are there to protect! We are guardians who keep an eye out for predators and look after our flock.
We are used to living in big open spaces so although it is not essential that I have an actual flock to protect, I will need space to move around. A large country-type block will be fine, or a hobby farm or similar.
I would much rather be a family dog than a working dog (and I've never lived with stock or poultry before, so I'm a bit old to take on that job now) but you can't forget my roots!
I have been bred to do a job so I'll need lots of stimulation like enrichment toys as well as daily exercise (twice a day would be best). Generally I get on with new dogs I meet but I am not used to busy dog parks and the like so please start off slowly and introduce me to one or two dogs at a time.
I'm a wonderful, gentle, loving and friendly boy who is desperate for a second chance but I want to make sure my new home is the perfect one.
In addition to keeping me physically fit and mentally stimulated, you'll need to keep up with grooming me (a good brush a couple of times a week is all I really need).
I know I have a few requirements, but that shouldn't put you off - if you're the right family for me, you'll know it.
Because of my instinct to protect and guard, I'm likely to be unsure of new people coming to the property and home once I've learned that it's my space. All this means is that with new visitors it's really important that you don't just assume I'll want to welcome them. You'll need to give them some food treats to give me so that I can associate them with positive things and it will be best for me to be on-lead and meet them calmly.
I've lived with kids over 5 years of age and will be fine to do so again. I've not really been around babies or toddlers but may be okay with them too.
Because of my early life, I can be nervous and hesitant with new situations so I can't wait to find someone who can help me build my confidence and strength.
I came into care with Mimi - no one is certain if she is actually my sister from the same litter, or just my long-term companion. Either way, we're great buds. It's a pretty big ask, we know, but we would really love to find a home together. Who doesn't want two big hairy cuddle bugs to lounge on the couch with?? We'll keep each other company when you're not around and will always be playmates and friends.
I'm a really amazing boy who just needs a second chance in the right place and to be shown that people can actually be great. Are you the one to show me that?!
Adoption details
Thank you for taking the time to view one of our lovely animals. We love them all and we hope you will too.
If you would like to know more about an animal please call Freedom on 0409 000 259. If it sounds like you and the furry creature are a suitable match then we will pass on the foster carer’s details to you so you can call and make a time to meet them.
Once you have met the animal and wish to go further then we may organise a yard check to ensure that your yard is safe and secure (dogs only). You can then take your new family member home on a 2 week trial and if you decide they are not suitable then you can return them.
If you are not sure how existing animals in your home might be affected, or you want a little extra time to get to know the nature of the animal, we may allow you to foster with a view to adopt.
