About Estella
Sweet Estella is a gorgeous loving little girl, with very engaging ways. She loves to be part of the puppy team and keeps up really well. Like her brother Otis she was born with cerebellar hypoplasia, and is mildly affected in her mobility. We noticed problems with coordination and balance appear at about 5 weeks. As she has grown she has gained strength and coordination though. Most of the time you wouldn't notice anything different about her - she can run and play like the others. Just occasionally if she is cold, or excited or tired, she becomes uncoordinated and has problems with balance. A good cuddle and reassurance helps her to get through those patches. She is such an engaging, playful, loving little pup, we just love her to bits.
Estella was born a day after her mum Pip came into care from a remote community in the Top End of the NT. She is named for the white mark of a shooting star on the back of her neck. Her mum did a great job with the pups, keeping them spotlessly clean, warm and well fed. She weaned them naturally a 7 weeks so have had a really good start. Estella has done really well given her developmental disability. In all other respects she is a healthy pup, who will make a wonderful family pet.
Our rescue and rehabilitation work happens in Central Australia, but because of the scarcity of adopters locally, our re-homing operation is in South Australia. Estella's adoption fee includes crate hire, courier transport by road from Tennant Creek to Alice Springs, and a direct flight from Alice Springs to Adelaide. Estella is currently in foster care in Elliott NT, but will be travelling to Adelaide into foster care with her brother Otis at the end of July.
Medical notes
Usually symptoms of cerebellar hypoplasia can be seen immediately at birth in cats, but sometimes can take two months or so to become apparent in dogs. Cerebellar hypoplasia causes jerky movements, tremors and generally uncoordinated motion. The animal often falls down and has trouble walking. Tremors increase when the animal is excited and subside when at ease.
