About Otis
Darling Otis is a really special little guy. He was the runt of the litter...such a tiny little puppy. But mum Pip made sure he got fed and cared for just like the others, and he has grown and thrived. At 5 weeks it became clear that Otis (like his sister Estella) had some issues with motor coordination and balance. It didn't stop him getting around. In fact he travelled further than all the others in his first few weeks (hence his nickname "The Explorer"). He was subsequently diagnosed with mild cerebellar hypoplasia. Over time and with maturity he has been able to compensate and now runs around and plays just like the other puppies. However at times of excitement, he can become uncoordinated. At these times a cuddle and settling him down works wonders. Otis certainly compensates for his disability with his extreme charm and sweet nature, and with great determination to keep up with the others.
Otis was born a day after his mum Pip came into care from a remote community in the Top End of the NT. His mum did a great job with the pups, keeping them spotlessly clean, warm and well fed. She weaned them naturally a 7 weeks so have had a really good start. Otis has done really well given his developmental disability. In all other respects he is a healthy pup, who will make a wonderful family pet.
Our rescue and rehabilitation work happens in Central Australia, but because of the scarcity of adopters locally, our re-homing operation is in South Australia. Otis'sadoption fee includes crate hire, courier transport by road from Tennant Creek to Alice Springs, and a direct flight from Alice Springs to Adelaide. Otis is currently in foster care in Elliott NT, but will be travelling to Adelaide into foster care with his sister Estella at the end of July.
Medical notes
Otis has mild cerebellar hypoplasia. This is a congenital non-progressive condition causing jerky movements, tremors and generally uncoordinated motion. Tremors increase when the animal is excited and subside when at ease. Youtube has video footage of a dachshund called Meatball who is affected to about the same degree as Otis.
