About Tilly ~ Cavalier x Maltese, 5yo (On Trial 4/6/18)
Matilda, or "Tilly" for short, is a 5yo, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel x Maltese girl. She is a total sweetheart. She loves playing fetch and tug with her favourite rope toy. She will run to chase the toy then bring it back and drop it at your feet to do it again. Her other favourite activity is going for walks. She is very happy to get her harness on and walk around the neighbourhood. She gets a bit frightened when she sees other dogs so I just distract her with some happy talk and we move away or turn around. When it's time to relax Tilly will jump up on your lap and be very content to keep you company while you watch TV. She's just the most gorgeous girl.
Tilly has a cautious nature. She is unsure of strangers and doesn't want to be touched until she gets to know you a bit. But if you sit down and wait for her to come to you she will soon be your friend and she will invite you to play fetch or tug with her. When she jumps up on your lap for a cuddle you know you have a friend for life. We all just adore her.
Tilly prefers to make you the centre of her world and isn't interested in meeting random dogs or strangers on the street. She doesn't like to go to the dog park or walk in areas where there are lots of other dogs, especially off lead dogs that might come racing up to her. She is foster care with two other small dogs and gets along fine with them but we think she would be happier as an only dog. If you have regular dog visitors or your family members have dogs she will get to know them and be ok.
Tilly travels well in the car. She has been to puppy school and sits when asked and comes when called. She responds well to positive reinforcement training. She's a good eater.
Tilly is an inside dog and is well housetrained. She likes exploring and playing in the garden but mostly she prefers to be inside with people. She likes to sleep in a bedroom, either in a dog bed or snuggled up with a person if allowed. She sleeps through the night without a peep. She is a good alarm dog who will let you know when people approach the house. Probably not suitable is you live in a busy area with lots of people waking past.
She has a beautiful, very soft, low shedding coat which needs regular brushing (every few days depending on length), bathing (every few weeks) and clipping (every 4 to 8 weeks) to keep her comfortable and beautiful. She is Cavalier size and weighs approximately 8 kgs.
Tilly has shown no interest in the chickens in their hutch in the backyard. She chases any cat that jumps over the fence so we don't think she'd be suitable to live with cats.
Tilly's foster carer has young children visiting frequently and Tilly is very good with them; of course, all children should understand to be gentle with dogs and not try to pick them up. Tilly is best suited to a more mature individual, couple or family as she prefers a slower pace of life. She needs a home where there is someone who doesn't work full time.
Tilly was surrendered to DRN after her family's circumstances changed. She was well looked after and has always been healthy. She has stolen our hearts and we look forward to finding her the perfect forever home.

Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can answer your questions and will ask you about the sort of home you are offering and may ask you to fill in our Adoption Questionnaire. Word format: http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.docx or PDF: http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.pdf
(2) If the questionnaire is approved you can arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. We will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
