About Kennedy D3877
Hi there, I'm Kennedy - a very handsome, young kelpie cross. I'm a very friendly soul and I love to be near you, lying at your feet mostly! I'm only just over a year old, a puppy still and I need someone who has the time to spend training me. I love to learn and play and need plenty of exercise. I love spending time with kids and have spent time with children aged 4 and 2. I'm a very kind hearted fellow but sometimes I get too excited and can jump up - this will improve with the training I mentioned earlier! I spend nights outside in the warm Karratha climate and don't bark or cause a fuss. I'm longing to be your best friend, I'll come when you call me and I'm learning for the first time to walk on a lead. I'm very clever, it won't take me long.
ADOPTING A WORKING DOG
All dogs need a lot of care - we working breed dogs just generally need more of it :) And that is part of the fun for you and me! We’ll develop an amazing bond because of what we do together and I’ll be the most loyal, devoted dog ever! We were bred to spend long days working, using our brains to solve problems. So we have a strong drive to be active and mentally stimulated. If we’re not working, we need help to use that energy and find ways to problem solve.
I’LL RELY ON YOU TO:
1 EXERCISE ME
Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! We need to wear off all that energy. I’d be an awesome jogging companion. Or you could get a tennis racket and I’ll chase the ball. And what about throwing one of those soft type dog frisbees that won’t hurt my teeth? And games of fetch where you teach me to drop the toy instead of turning it into a tug of war?
2 PROVIDE ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
Activities in the community include flyball, agility courses, herding and search and rescue. At home, I’d love to work for my food every day instead of just being given it. You could make food puzzles, or hide treats for me to sniff out and find, give me lovely big frozen blocks of stock or an ice block with a meaty treat in the middle.
3 BE CONSISTENT WITH BOUNDARIES
Consistent, clear boundaries mean I’ll always knows the right way to behave. Keep me off the sofa and human beds. Give me a bed of my own and make it clear that is my space. If you let me break a rule once, I’ll probably break it again.
4 TRAIN ME
Teach me these basic commands as they’ll get us through any situation: sit, down, stay, come, down, no, stop and leave it. Let’s practice them every day so I’m always primed to obey. When training, be happy and excited. Reward me with treats or pats when I pay attention or perform a command correctly. Do not punish me for unwanted behaviour as that can lead to fear and aggression. Instead, redirect my thoughts when I’m doing something you don’t want me to do eg if I chew on something you don’t want me to have, take it away. But trade it for a chew toy.
5 SOCIALISE ME
Introduce me to as many people, places, animals, sounds, and smells as possible. I’ll be well adjusted because of it. If I start any herding tendencies, speak to SAFE or a trainer to nip it in the bud as early as possible.
I CAN FLY!
A few hours flying to Perth is absolutely worth it for animals who are located remotely if it means they have the opportunity to be adopted. Talk to SAFE about flying me to you for around $150. Travel costs are negotiable and never get in the way of a good match up!
