About Bobby - special needs
Yes, Bobby is adorable! But as much as Bobby is adorable, he is quirky. Given his quirkiness, Bobby isn’t looking for an owner – he is looking for a manager!
Bobby’s history is unknown but we can only assume he has been treated poorly. He displays some fear issues and likes to have a safe place to hide when he is feeling anxious. He will need a safe, quiet place in his new home until he settles in. Bobby can sometimes be protective of his ‘safe place’ and his new owner (and other dogs in the house) need to respect this area. Due to these fear issues Bobby will not be suitable for a home with children.
Bobby tries to be friendly meeting new people, however he is a very suspicious dog. He usually approaches strangers with a tail wag, but can quickly become anxious and bring out his inner diva, especially if patted on the head by a stranger. Bobby has learned to trust his foster carer enough for him to be patted all over and Bobby really relaxes and enjoys this affection. It is lovely seeing Bobby comfortable and trusting enough to roll over and fully relax and enjoy a tummy rub.
Bobby is usually great with other dogs … unless he meets them on a lead or if the dog is too boisterous. Sometimes he can wag his tail and be happy and friendly meeting other dogs on a lead, whereas other times he can find some bravado and he will bark and growl until he can trust the other dog. He has been very friendly with his two foster siblings and loves to play with them. He tolerates a big dog bounding around, constantly wanting to play with him.
Bobby is happiest when he is playing fetch with his human. He loves toys and he loves to share his enjoyment of toys with his human. However, his new owner will need to understand that on rare occasions Bobby can get possessive of his toys and learn how to deflect Bobby’s attention when he does occasionally become possessive.
Bobby has provided his foster carer with many laughs due to his diva-esque personality. Bobby likes to ‘tell off’ the moon if it’s too big and bright in the sky. He also doesn’t appreciate other dogs wearing jackets and will protest at the offending dog until the jacket is removed. Bobby is a hilarious character and we know he will provide his new owner with a lifetime of laughs and stories.
He walks well on the lead and sits patiently for his dinner. He is a very smart dog, he is very treat-motivated, so with the right bribe he will oblige!
He is full of personality and he is trying his best to be a happy, fun dog, but his past still sometimes affects him. We believe with the right owner Bobby will be able to put his past behind him and enjoy a life of fun and love.
Our little diva has listed key selection criteria for his new manager! In consultation with Bobby, we think he will thrive best with an owner who:
• has significant experience with other ‘divas’, having owned challenging dogs or formal education in dog behaviour modification
• is consistent in applying training methods (even if Bobby protests or shows his cute ‘puppy dog eyes’)
• will take on-board guidance from Homeless Hounds / other trainers (if necessary) on how to best manage Bobby’s routine and behaviour
• has patience and empathy for a dog who is learning
• will not expect Bobby to instantly become a loving, easy-going dog with his new owner, their friends / family, and other unfamiliar dogs, but will have the knowledge that Bobby will become a happy loving member of the family with consistency, time, and patience
We know the right match for Bobby is out there and we are confident this person will eventually be rewarded with a lifetime of laughs and love with an adorable dog that has the biggest personality we have come across!
