Rufus MD0021

Rufus was a rescue originally found in Meekatharra and brought to SAFE to find a family of his own. Currently in foster care with 2 larger dogs, Rufus is a part of the crew and is friends with all! He is playful with other dogs and loves to be fussed over. In the car he likes to pop his head out the window and smell the world go by. He has long legs, a scruffy wiry coat, and weighs 14kg.

The cardiologist has now confirmed (after an ultrasound) that Rufus has a level 5 heart murmur (the scale is 1-6). He has a kink in one vessel and is a good candidate for a procedure called dilation. If the procedure is successful he will have a normal life expectancy. SAFE is arranging for the procedure to be done (funded by private donations) but it may take 2-3 months as the surgeon is Melbourne based and will fly to Perth to do several surgeries at once. In the meantime, Rufus is on daily medication to relieve some of the pressure on his heart (his carer says he's easy to medicate). He needs to avoid strenuous exercise and live in a calm and stress free environment.

We believe Rufus would enjoy a household with a small, calm dog, or one where he gets plenty of human companionship. He’s a typical young dog and the heart murmur doesn’t seem to have affected his energetic attitude to play. He loves his food, loves cuddles and playing, and is currently teething, so a few good chew toys are a must!
