About Laila CD0263
Hi! My name is Laila. I’m the sweetest little girl with the biggest smile! I’m here in PERTH and I’m looking for a very special home. I have a very loving and devoted nature. I would spend all day cuddling if I could. The photographer fell more than a little in love with me.
I’m sure you know already that border collies are very clever and have a high working drive. So lots of stimulating activities are important to channel that energy and challenge my mind and body. I will bond very closely to my owner and would like to be an only pet. It would be so fun if you played games gently with me and did enrichment activities like hiding my food in different toys. A Kong with food in it and then frozen, would last me ages!
I am very small for a pure bred female border collie. I’m from very good working dog lineage, but I was originally sold as a pet because of my petite size. I weigh about 16kg. I have quite a high working drive, although I’ve never been properly tested for herding, but I don’t think I’d like being yelled at! If it could all be done quietly, I think I might excel at it.
I would like a stable and predictable home, in a quiet area and on a big property. You see, I have anxiety. I’ve been working with a behaviourist from Kalmpets which is Dr Kate’s animal behaviour centre. So I have a really good training program in place and the vets know my triggers and what I need to help me feel a whole lot better. I’m on medication and the vets would like me to stay on that for 12 months to help me relax and get comfortable with my training. I adore my owners and they adore me, but they have a young baby and another dog and two cats too! And I’m not a good sharer. In fact, border collies often bond closely to just one person and I’m one of those types. So my owners would like me to find a home that is just right for me so I can be happy.
My new owner will be patient and understanding, experienced with dogs, and have lots of time to commit to working with me several times a day in an ongoing way. The vet would like you to know that I’ll never be dog or cat social although I might develop a small, trusted group of doggy friends. What we’re working towards is that when unknown dogs approach me, that I will be able to ignore them. Right now, I’d like to round them all up and that is not good manners in the doggy world.
And I would really love a job to do to put my smart mind and active body to work. Maybe once I’ve adjusted to my new environment, you could set up an agility course on your property and we could gradually start doing that together! That would be AWESOME! And you could do things like hide treats for me to sniff out and find, give me lovely big frozen blocks of stock or an ice block with a chicken wing in the middle. I wonder what it’s like to play with one of those soft type dog frisbees. I’d probably have to get used to it first before you threw it for me. You could leave it lying around and maybe put some food on it for me to eat and I would get used to its smell. Then you could show it to me and just throw it gently somewhere away from me. And work up from there. That would be the best way for me to train in anything new - slowly and build up. I will need at least a week of just peace and quiet when I first arrive at your house, to give me time to adjust to it all.
