About Nanook
Meet Nanook. With Bambi-like features and the agility of a gazelle, he will melt your heart. If you want a quiet life, Nanook is NOT for you – he will chat til the cows come home. If it’s fun and a good conversation you’re after, read on…
He is cute, of course; he’s a puppy. But he also has a loving nature and a lot of mischief! Not a day goes by where he doesn’t make us laugh! Playing is his favourite pastime, of course. He loves a game of chase or hide-and-seek: just watch him waiting to spring out on his unsuspecting victim! He also loves to play fetch and he will even bring the ball back to you.
When he isn’t running around or playing rough bitey-face with his foster-sister, Nanook is super placid and likes a good snooze, especially with you. He is a people-orientated pup that wants nothing more than to spend his days inside with his family, whether he will be sharing your bed, watching TV or taking a car trip to the beach.
His confidence has improved dramatically since we first brought him home, and although he is still wary around dogs, new people and little ones, he is happy to walk up and say hi. This boy has been exposed to lots of different situations, but he still gets jumpy and may bark when approached suddenly. Combining this with his boisterous play, he would best suit an adult family or a family with teens.
His foster-sister has taught him some manners and he has practiced his etiquette on her, but he will need continuing socialisation & obedience training, so his new family must have a keen interest and previous experience in dog obedience. A strong but tolerant female companion of similar size will suit this chap, as he does like to test those boundaries from time to time!
Nanook is extremely food-orientated and quick to pick up new commands. He will show you a mean paw-shake at meal times with some comedy extras. He walks well on a leash – as long as you show him the good stuff! He will pull in exciting situations, such as when other dogs or rabbits are running around. However, we’ve come along in leaps and bounds in regaining his attention and this will only improve with confidence and ongoing training. We have been working to discourage him to chase small animals so safe to say he will not suit a home with small critters such as cats, rabbits, chooks or pocket pets. He is also not suited to farm life, farm fencing and being around livestock.
Nanook is such a beautiful boy that it’s easy to overlook his malamute ways...But he has a couple of typical mallie traits that are worth mentioning…
He will need some company throughout the day such as a lively dog or a human companion to stop him getting into so much mischief, as like any Arctic breed worth his fluff, he can be a bit naughty when left unattended. He will dig "little" holes in the lawn for fun and he likes to attack those pesky tree branches within his reach. He has also developed a fondness for leather furniture; he specifically likes to hunt the stuffing… He usually de-stuffs the sofa while we are at work, because he is mallie pup and it's just so much fun! So if you have a home with nice things and a beautiful garden you may want to take this info into consideration.
Did I mention he likes food? So much so, we have kept him separate from his foster-sister when eating, as he likes to check whether she has finished - much to her annoyance. He has had crate training in the past, so this is an option if necessary.
If you are ready for some love to explode into your life, apply soon as he is sure to be snapped up!
