About Leon
Leon is a shy little man when you first meet him, but warms up quickly once he's given some cuddles. He is 1 of 4 pups that arrived into care after being dumped on the doorstep of a local vet. He is currently in foster care with his brother Theo, 4 host dogs and a resident cat. We believe that Leon is a mix of Mastiff and Shar pei and will be a large dog when fully grown.
This little guy has settled in beautifully to his foster home and enjoys the company of both dogs and humans. He's quite happy to spend his days outdoors, as long as he has someone to play with, a full belly, a comfy place to snooze and some toys (or sticks/leaves) to keep him amused. He is both dog and cat friendly and learning to use the grass for toileting, which he's almost mastered. Leon is currently sleeping outside with his brother at night on a comfy trampoline bed and has shown no food aggression while in care.
Leon has not been regularly exposed to young children in his foster home and due to his size as an adult (and clumsiness), we would recommend children over the age of 8 years. We feel he would suit a home with another older active dog, to learn from and keep him entertained while his humans were away. He would also benefit from having a designated area where he can happily dig to find treasures :) Leon will need ongoing training in his forever home and a strong pack leader. Ideally, someone who has experience with the Shar pei breed and confidence with large dogs is recommended. He will need to be made to feel a part of the family and socialised well in his puppy stages. If he was to be an only dog, he would need continued socialisation with other dogs during his puppy stage and into adulthood, as well as ongoing training so that he grows up to be a well mannered, socialised young man.
We would love to help get you started with that, so our amazing supporters, Best Friends - Erina, have kindly offered to include a 5 week Puppy training course with all of our Puppy adoptions (up to 16wks of age)....The Best Friends Puppy Pre-School service is a fun and interactive five-week training course that covers puppy behaviours, diet, health, grooming, exercise and play, with an emphasis on socialisation, command training, health and care. Their aim is to teach you positive ways to train your puppy in basic skills such as ‘sit’, ‘drop’, ‘stay’, and how to walk well on a lead, but also how to control your puppy’s not so desirable behaviours like toileting inside, biting, mouthing and separation anxiety.
Leon is yet to have his vet work done but we are happy to organise meets in the next couple of weeks, and secure an adoption with a non refundable deposit so that he can head off to his new home once his vet work is done (3rd Jan).
