About Heinz
Heinz's paperwork lists him as a Kelpie x Chihuahua, and we're sure hoping the mum was the Kelpie as this gorgeous boy is much larger then the chihuahuas in his foster home. He's only lightweight at about 8kg however he has long legs.
Whilst he might be bigger than the rest of the pack, he sure isn't letting that prevent him from being a total lap dog. Heinz is so affectionate and cuddly and gentle.
Our trainers have been working with Heinz as he has some seperation anxiety. When he first moved in with his foster mum, he would cry pitifully when she left the room. However with lots of patience and a positive behaviour plan from our trainer, Heinz's mum has done a phenomenal job in transforming Heinz. He still loves company and we'd prefer him to go to a home where he isnt spending all day on his lonesome, Heinz definitely needs a couch buddy to sit beside and enjoy his days. He also enjoys a gentle stroll and has accompanied his foster carers on some lovely walks in the bush or by the ocean.
Heinz is an older boy with cagey joints so he certainly isnt looking for a fast paced life, but he is truly the most wonderful, social companion.
He gets along very well with other dogs, is gentle and sweet with children and is just the perfect natured dog.
Medical notes
*** Heinz is a special needs dog and will require daily medication for the rest of his life. ***
When Heinz came into care we noticed some muscle wastage in his hind region. Xrays revealed an old but stable spinal injury.
Heinz needs a gentle home without stairs. He is on joint support food and natural supplements. He takes daily anti-inflammatory medication and gabapentin. These meds cost about $20 a week.
Heinz copes very well however our vets have said that due to his age, the best plan forward is supportive care and lots of love. He received acupuncture from our Vet which has also helped improve his comfort levels.
All Chihuahua Rescue Queensland dogs have been fully health checked by our vets. We offer a free post-adoption health check with Greencross Vets at Chermside, Jindalee, Browns Plains or Indooroopilly hospitals. This gives you the opportunity to talk directly to the vet about any questions you may have. We provide all veterinary records for each dog, including copies of blood tests, any relevant X-rays and medical notes.
All Chihuahua Rescue Queensland dogs are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. We test all our dogs for heartworm and treat them with regular parasite prevention.
