About Maddie (D0008) * Adoption Pending *
Meet a very special girl. Maddie loves being with people; even strangers can pat her. She loves affection, pats and hugs. While she has a lot of things she’s frightened of or nervous about, people aren’t one of them. She likes to stay close to her foster mum – if foster mum is inside, Maddie’s inside, if foster mum goes out in the backyard, Maddie will come too. She also enjoys a tummy rub.
While she can be left outside with a treat when you go out, she much prefers to be inside whenever possible. She’s super excited when her foster mum comes home after being out for a couple of hours, gallops back and forth from the carport to the back door, can’t wait to get indoors and say hello.
She has a beautiful, placid nature, a really sweet, gentle soul. She’s very well-behaved, comes when she’s called, rarely barks, doesn’t dig, and is house-trained. She’s not high energy although she does enjoy a gentle game of tug-of-war with her soft toys once she gets to know you. She walks well on a lead, at a leisurely pace, doesn’t pull except up the driveway to get to the front door.
Maddie has had a rough start in life. She has high levels of anxiety in certain situations and is shy and timid by nature. She’s very good with people and wary of some dogs (she seems to prefer small, quiet dogs). She doesn’t like water (not even reticulation or walking in light rain) so best not in a home with a pool and is fearful of going to the beach. She also doesn’t like riding in cars though she will do short car rides after she gets to know you, trembling on the back seat. She is fearful of vans, trucks and buses, thunder and fireworks. She will need to be walked in a quiet park or around quiet streets. While her last owners were a loving family, due to work commitments and Maddie’s high anxiety levels, they were unable to give her the time and attention she needs. Prior to this family, she was with a breeder and living in a harsh environment, including concrete flooring, cages and having several litters.
Maddie has recently been to the vet for x-rays and been diagnosed with spondylosis, a degenerative condition of her lower spine. Due to these arthritic changes and resulting nerve pressure, she doesn’t walk evenly and should only be taken on a slow 20 minute walk each day. She will need to be on daily medication and supplements such as fish oil and kelp powder to ease her pain and help her joints for the rest of her life. She will also need to have her weight monitored so she doesn’t become overweight which will exacerbate her joint pain.
She can be left home alone but given her love of people, it would be ideal for her to go to a home where someone is home most of the time. She might live with a small, quiet dog, pending a meeting. We don’t know how she is with cats. She wouldn’t be suited to living with with younger children, given they can be noisy and energetic. Maddie needs a quiet, gentle environment to match her quiet, gentle personality. She is now looking for someone to show her the love and affection she craves, and who will monitor her health issues.
If you can offer a peaceful environment, are looking for a quiet, devoted dog and the two of you can spend lots of time together, special Maddie could be the dog for you. Click on the link below to complete an enquiry.
