About Buddy ~German Spitz x Shih Tzu (On Trial 20/7/17)
Buddy is a 7 month old, male German Spitz x Shih Tzu, who is ready to find his forever home.
Buddy is looking for a human family that has the time and patience to work with him on his puppy basics. Buddy has spent the first 6 months of his life developing his endearing happy go lucky attitude to life, but hasn't paid much attention to toilet training opportunities or opportunities to socialise with a range of canine friends and therefore is at stage one of these basics.
Buddy is a clever little man (5.6kg in fact) and has learned to sit in just a few days, he is used to indoor access and is learning to take himself outside frequently. When his humans arrive home he gets very excited and will often have little bathroom accidents as he runs in circles yapping quite loudly, yet is learning to settle down the more he has people around. He therefore needs a family with someone home a little bit especially for his earlier years while he settles into a more mature dog and a family that is wanting to work on his training through positive reinforcement.
Buddy’s favourite place is cuddled up on a lap - child or adult, he does not mind. He absolutely loves the car and would ride in it all day. He is a highly energetic little man and loves a good play, he is however not suited to large companion friends as he is very intimidated and barks a lot sometimes, even yelping and crying with fear and anxiety. He is reactive to smaller dogs also, yet once he establishes they are no threat, he runs around playing. He is currently best friends with a mini foxie x chi and does get on with the quiet beagle, yet is terrified of the more active beagle and Kelpie. He is too much for an impatient older dog as he doesn't understand dog language very well and will continue to harass, evoking annoyance from more sedentary dogs at times.
Buddy would benefit from formal social skills through a puppy pre school or obedience classes and I'm sure will develop his social skills the more he learns other dogs can be fun and are not always a threat. He has good recall, is great with cats and kids, although his excitability can see him jump and sometimes nibble a bit so families less experienced with dogs, with very young children or children who are timid with dogs are not suitable. Buddy has a longer coat requiring regular bathing and grooming, yet seems to be a low shedding dog.

Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can answer your questions and will ask you about the sort of home you are offering and may ask you to fill in our Adoption Questionnaire. Word format: http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.docx or PDF: http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.pdf
(2) If the questionnaire is approved you can arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. We will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
