About Coffey- Special Needs
***Update***
After having Coffey spend some time with older, non-playful cats, we are open to trialing him in a home with an existing cat who would not be inclined to engage in play.
------------------------------------
Please say hello to Coffey!
This very special boy is looking for a very specific home, so please read his profile in full, before sending an enquiry. :)
Coffey has Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy but is not symptomatic and is not currently in heart failure. Unfortunately there is no cure or treatment for his condition and absolutely no way of knowing if or when he will become symptomatic. He has had an echocardiogram which has established the current extent of his condition, but without knowing how long it took to reach this point, there is no way of knowing if it has progressed or if his heart has been in the same condition since birth.
There is no way to know if or how fast it will progress from here, he could remain as he is now for 10 years or more, or he could deteriorate in a few months. If his condition does worsen, again, there is no way to know how his body will cope with this. He may be fine one day and in dire straits the next or it could slowly worsen requiring medication, but unlike dogs, who can live for years on heart meds, the medications generally only buy cats a few extra months.
Coffey will require a very specific home in order to give him the best chance of a full and long life and we would ask that you research Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy before expressing your interest.
Coffey’s heart needs as little stress placed on it and as little work asked of it as possible. For this reason he will need to be an only cat, in a quiet, mature home. As much as Coffey loves other cats, his heart is not capable of sustaining regular play. The temptation to play beyond the means of his heart would be too much if he were to have a permanent cat companion. Coffey will need to be an indoor only cat in a single level home. A full flight of stairs would be too much for him on a daily basis and the temptation to race up and down them would certainly get the better of him.
Should he be become otherwise unwell or there is a noticeable change in his health/behaviour in the future, his vet may request he have another echocardiogram to see if there have been changes in his condition. This is a specialist procedure and will cost in the range of $800. Any potential applicants need to be sure that this is within their financial means, should it be required. While echocardiograms could be done every 12 months or so, to track the progression of his condition, this is not necessary, as changes in his results do not mean there will be changes in his general physical condition, but this is an option, should his adopter like to track the progression of his Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
Coffey’s weight will need to be monitored weekly and his food intake adjusted accordingly. He is currently an ideal weight and needs to remain at this weight. Any heavier will place more strain on his heart and should he begin to lose weight, this could be an indication that his heart is starting to fail.
Coffey is a happy playful boy who alternates between short bursts of play and lounging around like a lion prince! He enjoys being held, is not fussed by being carrier and is generally a very relaxed cat.
While Coffey was surrendered as a purebred Persian, we suspect there's possibly some Maine Coon mixed in, as he is truly huge!
Coffey is in care in Mooroolbark and is not available for interstate adoption.
Medical notes
