Dakota

Foster care is often a wonderful gift for our dogs, helping them gain confidence, social skills (both doggy and human) and come out of their shells, truly becoming the dogs they were always destined to be.

One of these huskies is Dakota. His name means ‘friend’ and ‘ally’ and it’s the perfect name for this handsome rust coloured bear. After several months in a loving foster home, his newfound confidence is allowing his wonderful personality to shine.

When we first met Dakota, he was broken and scared, and he’s now blossomed into a happy, loving, gentle little soul. The perfect home for him will be one where he’ll be loved and nurtured, and a bit of patience so he can really settle in, will see him truly thrive.

Dakota has been living in a foster care with a small pack with two fellow huskies and he’s learnt so much (thanks to his awesome foster family), such as how to execute the perfect zoomie, play happily with other dogs, jump on the trampoline and just chill in the shade of a tree.

Dakota has learnt how to be an excellent inside-outside dog, who is now used to sleeping inside overnight. He loves being inside, is now toilet trained, and can communicate when he needs to go out. He can ‘hold tight’ from 10:30pm until 7:30am with no worries and not needing to go out, so he’s settled right into a good routine that will see him do well in most homes. He’s quite capable of chilling out and is great company.

This little bear has shiny new house manners and loves hanging with his humans (and enjoys supervising the cooking) but his secret favourite thing is snuggling on the bed with his people. Affection was in short supply for Dakota before he went into care, and boy has he realised how awesome it is, loving to both receive and give cuddles and kisses.  

He is quite a little chatterbox, and loves having an opinion, so if you’re after a husky who will happily sing you the song of his people, Dakota is the guy for you!

He’s very good at learning new things and is good at picking up non-verbal cues, so he will learn the flow and pace of his new family in no time. He’d love to learn a few more tricks and wants guidance to help him fit in, and has a beautiful, gentle personality that is really starting to shine through. 

Dakota gets along fine with bigger kids, isn’t destructive and won’t pinch washing off the line, but does love helping mum get the wet laundry out of the machine and drinking water straight from the hose – I mean, who wouldn’t!? 

In typical husky style, Dakota loves long walks and having lots of play time in the yard and another dog is an absolute must to keep him company.  He’s got decent jumping and digging skills so will need standard husky-proofing in his yard. 

This little bear has come such a long way and is ready to meet his forever family, bringing his new manners and love of cuddles with him.
