About Hamish assisting rehome
Hamish is a special needs dog who needs someone with time and patience to help him, no other pets and no small children. His problem is that although most of the time he is happy and will play and interact with other dogs without a problem, he will very randomly growl, snap and has occasionally started a fight with our dogs, for no apparent reason and without warning. He goes from no problem to upset very quickly and we have so far not worked out any particular trigger. He will run to greet us at the door with our other dogs, they will all sniff around outside, they will lie around resting, all happily, but then from nowhere Hamish will get upset.
With humans Hamish is very shy and timid at first, if you approach him too quickly he will growl and cower. But if you give him space, let him approach you and give him time, he is very loving once he feels comfortable with you. It only took him half a day to become comfortable with us and now he loves a pat whenever he can get one.
We met his previous owners who said they’d had him since he was a pup and he’d just always been shy, but other than that they said he’d had no problems at all. I’m not so sure about that, but that is what we were told. We’ve had him checked by a vet who said other than some allergic eye inflammation he is in very good health, good teeth and joints all appear good too.
Day to day he loves to lounge around close to his humans most of the time, but if you offer him a walk he will jump at the opportunity to run around and chase birds, rabbits and possums! He doesn't have any road sense, and he does pull on the lead until his initial excitement calms, so a safe off leash area to release his energy would very much suit him.
As previously stated we cannot send him to a home with other pets or with small children as we would not feel comfortable potentially putting children or other pets at risk, but we know that he could make a lovely addition to someone’s home if you have the patience to help him.
