About Norman ~ GreyhoundxKelpie (adopted by carer)
Meet Norman, Norman is a 1 year old Greyhound x Kelpie. Norman has easily stolen everyone’s heart: big and fast, a little bit clumsy and a little bit cheeky, he has the most beautiful face with a heart shaped mask. Norman has a really nice character, is quite obedient and is responding well to training. At almost 25 kilos he is a biggish dog, with long legs and an athletic muscly body. I would not recommend Norman for a family with really young children just because he may inadvertently knock them over.
He loves, LOVES going for long walks and runs and his new family really needs to keep this in mind otherwise he could easily get bored and naughty. We walk him twice a day, morning and evening and his is responding really well. Ah, did I mention that he also is good when travelling in the car? He walks well on leash, i.e. does not pull, however he is still unsure about which side he prefers to walk. We have another dog and we take them out together without any problem (if you can deal with occasionally untangling leads …)
Norman really likes meeting new people and making friends with everyone. At times he might still jump up to greet but he is learning that this is not appropriate. He does sit and waits for his food. He is not a frantic eater, actually he is very gentle when you give him a treat and eats his meal slowly, one bite at the time. We still are feeding him twice a day because he came to us a bit underweight. The vet said that he is very healthy and that he “will never be a fat dog”. According to him Norman is a cross between a Bull Arab, a German Sheppard and a Greyhound. We are not sure about his genetics but he has certainly taken plenty of good qualities from this interesting pool. He sleeps outside at night and during the day he is out or in as he prefers. He is toilet trained although a couple of days ago we did have one little wet accident.
Norman is generally not a barker but will fret a bit when everybody leaves the house at once and leaves him behind. Before we “Norman proofed our 4 feet gate” he managed to escape our garden by jumping out. Ideally Norman would need to have another companion dog to play and run around with. He loves playing “catch me if you can” and “Tug o war” either with his canine friends or humans. He is not fazed by cats and completely ignores them. We have not tried him around chickens but we have noticed that he would love to chase a bird or two, not to mention rabbits.

Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can answer your questions and will ask you about the sort of home you are offering and may ask you to fill in our Adoption Questionnaire http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.docx
(2) If the questionnaire is approved you can arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. We will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
