About Dallas
Hey there! I'm a giant sook, with a heart of gold and a gentle soul. I am all sorts of endearing, everyone who meets me falls in love with me and my sweet, quirky nature. If you want to give an old-timer a second chance I really do need that lucky break!
I had a family up until recently, but they decided they were going to have human kids so to prepare, they had to get rid of innocent ol' me. I was going to be put to sleep but luckily a family member stepped in and got me to the rescue group SAFE Avon Valley. It has been pretty traumatic for me losing my home and everything familiar after so many years and I REALLY want to go to a home where I will be appreciated for the gentle, happy guy I am.
It is never to late for a second chance!
So a bit more about me: I'm a big boy, around 40kg and I could stand to gain some weight to get me ideal. But I am rather oblivious to my size and just galumph around the place, flopping my dangling ears and wobbly jowls into all your business (in the politest possible way). I am still strong on the lead, I generally walk very well, a real gentleman, but if something particularly interesting catches my nose I will give you a good tug to investigate it. So I need someone comfortable handling me.
I love love love human company and prefer to have you around rather than be left for long periods of time, although I am adjusting more to that now. I would ideally like to live with someone who works from home a bit or maybe shift workers so that there is someone around to chill with me. But I could adjust to being alone more so if you work but really love me, please get in touch anyway to discuss.
I have lived with small children before, I have no known history of ever having problems with a child (or anyone - there's not a mean bone in my body). But my size could be overwhelming for some kids and with a bit of arthritis setting in I wouldn't appreciate littlies climbing all over me. Probably teenagers and adults are more my thing.
Here's a good one - I LOVE cats! I have always lived with a cat and love to play with them, I am surprisingly gentle and affectionate and really enjoy engaging with my little feline friends. It is a pretty winning quality I have to say! I have also lived with chickens in my yard and I wasn't fussed about them at all.
I've never lived with another dog before and I will need to be an only dog. My previous family didn't walk or socialise me much at all so I am a bit confused about what kind of play is appropriate with other dogs and I definitely have a tendency to forget my size. I would like the chance to learn more about socialising with other dogs at the park and so on, but I need to be the only dog in the home. On lead I tend to get a bit worked up and silly around others so I will need some help from you to over-come that.
You couldn't ask for much of a more well-mannered house guest than me - I'm perfectly house-trained and will politely ask to go outside when needed. I settle well on my bed and I know some basic commands like how to sit for you. I don't generally scab for food, though be careful with breakables on low tables, I forget how big my head is!
In a nutshell this is me - gentle, affectionate, loving, gentlemanly, a bit of a goof. And this is my ideal family - a home a fair bit to hang out, able to handle a strong boy on lead, in need of a truly loving, loyal, devoted companion. Preferably with a cat :)
If you think we are perfect for each other, I would LOVE to meet you!
Medical notes
When we head towards our golden years, illnesses start to creep in here and there. My general health is very good but there are just a couple of things that I need you to take special care of to ensure I stay as fit and strong as possible. First things first - when I came into foster care I had a massive aural haemotoma. That's when a whole lot of blood vessels in one of my big gorgeous floppy ears burst and my ear became hugely swollen. It was SO sore and uncomfortable and it had been left like that for a while by my last owners so I needed surgery on it straight away. I actually ended up needing TWO surgeries to get it better! My ear is mostly healed now from the surgery and I am feeling a million bucks. There is another issue at play here, which is WHY did all the blood vessels burst? I have had problems with getting ear infections all my life and my last family weren't very good at treating me when they developed. My ear was so sore that I literally shook by head so hard it caused those ruptured vessels.
So what does this mean? You will need to clean my ears out twice a week for the rest of my life - this will obviously keep them clean and prevent build-up of debris and because you will be checking them often, you will notice if they look infected so I can get checked right away. I don't mind having them cleaned, it is a 5 minute job and not too much of a chore.
I'm getting a bit stiff and sore and arthritic in some of my joints too (happens to the best of us!!) There isn't too much that needs to be done about that at the moment, though you can help by adding dietary supplements like glucosamine or fish oil (both available from the chemist). And just be aware that I need somewhere warm and comfy to sleep.
Adoption details
Thank you for taking the time to view one of our lovely animals. We love them all and we hope you will too.
If you would like to know more about an animal please call Freedom on 0409 000 259. If it sounds like you and the furry creature are a suitable match then we will pass on the foster carer’s details to you so you can call and make a time to meet them.
Once you have met the animal and wish to go further then we may organise a yard check to ensure that your yard is safe and secure (dogs only). You can then take your new family member home on a 2 week trial and if you decide they are not suitable then you can return them.
If you are not sure how existing animals in your home might be affected, or you want a little extra time to get to know the nature of the animal, we may allow you to foster with a view to adopt.
This pet has been adopted and found love with its new family.
