About Knox
Knox is a timid but loveable 1-year-old Great Dane x Bull Arab boy who is just learning to trust in humans again. For reasons in his past which are unknown, he can be quite fearful of people, especially men, but has been making great progress in his current foster home through the use of positive rewards based training, counter conditioning and the aid of therapeutic medication.
Once you have gained his trust (which only took a matter of a few days) he will want to give you all his love and joy, is extremely cuddly and affectionate and will take all the attention you can give him! Knox is looking for a home where he can receive the same patience and love in return and with time, he’d love to be included in your daily activities. He loves to run and bounce around and is able to jump high, so will require a home with space and good tall fencing.
He would be best suited as an only dog to begin with as his training requires a lot of one on one dedication, though he is friendly with dogs.
His Ideal humans would work from home, or have quite a bit of time and dedication, energy, patience and consistency for Knox’s training. A family willing to give their all to show Knox that world can’t hurt him anymore. Knox’s anxiety means his humans would need to be conscious and aware of his environmental stimuli to manage threshold levels. Knox does not know his size or strength so at this point in time would not be suited to a house with small children.
Knox absolutely loves other dogs and prefers playing with dogs over any toy but requires a slow and gentle introduction to them and their owner. He is still learning the ropes and can get over-excited quite quickly. Play sessions need to be controlled with regular breaks to calm down. He would really benefit from regular interaction and socialisation with similar aged and sized dogs.
He is an adorable big boy, is house trained and enjoys his daily routine. He has good manners around humans eating and will let you eat in peace while sitting next to you. He has also learnt to sit on his mat for short periods while watching his carers do chores such as cooking dinner. He feels safest when he’s in the company of his carers and would therefore be more suited to a home where he is not left alone for long periods at a time.
Knox is extremely motivated by food and has shown himself to learn quickly when his carers are consistent and train with him regularly. He has already learnt to sit, stay, drop and play dead on command when there is a tasty reward involved. His recall is improving and enjoys going on consistent early morning or late evening walks when there are not many other people and dogs around as too much environmental stimuli can frighten him. He has learnt to walk on a no pull harness. He is used to being inside and is house trained too but loves to run around the backyard and lie around in the sun when you are around.
Knox really needs stability in his life with committed, loving, gentle understanding parents that can continue to help him on his journey by keeping up with his positive training. Once he has gained your trust he will love nothing more than to snuggle up to you and stare at you adoringly with those big soulful eyes!
Knox is located in West Footscray with his two foster carers and another resident staffy rescue dog. If you’d like to meet Knox, please send us an enquiry by clicking the ‘enquire about this pet’ blue button at the top of the page.
