Merlot ~ Lakeland Terrier~ On Trial 18/7/16

Introducing delightful Merlot - a 2 year old Lakeland Terrier. Merlot gets along well with everyone as he loves people. He is a small medium size and he doesn’t jump up, so he is a great sized dog to have with kids. He is very gentle and has a passive temperament so he would suit home with quiet children who are confident with dogs, or a very doting couple who are home a lot. Being such a gentle boy he would love a family who are also gentle and loving with him as he is not a fan of loud noises or raised voices.

Merlot loves human companionship so his ideal home is one where he will be included in family activities and receive a lot of affection. He follows you around like a shadow, and enjoys pats and cuddles. He is an inside /outside dog – he loves to have a play in the yard and come in and out of the house as he pleases. He sleeps inside and is toilet trained (however like most dogs when they are moved to a new environment he might have some accidents whilst settling in).

Merlot has basic training and will sit and come, he is responsive to training as he likes to please you. He loves playing with toys and running around the yard with them after you throw them. He will happily play this game all day with you. After a good romp outside he will sometimes lay in his bed in front of the heater on his back with his legs sticking straight out which is very cute to see.

Merlot has a woolly coat that doesn’t shed much, and doesn’t have a doggy smell. He has recently been clipped so his coat is short, but as it grows it gets very curly. Due to his low shedding coat he needs to be clipped and groomed every few months to keep him looking and feeling beautiful. He feels the cold when his coat is short so he will need a jacket in the colder weather. He is quite fussy with food and therefore is not a fan of canned or dry food.

Merlot loves a walk in the park and he will meet and greet everyone and their dog whilst he’s out - he will wait for pats from new people without jumping up. He walks well on a lead and is happy off-lead in a safe, fenced park as he stays close to you. In an unfenced area he may be distracted and want to investigate so his off lead recall needs extra training. Once he has meet other dogs, he will usually move on as he is more of a people dog. Although he would suit a home with another gentle and sensible dog, he would also suit being an only dog as long as he has lots of human company. He is best in a home without chickens or birds (as advised by his previous owner as he loves to chase), since being in foster care he hasn’t been tested with cats. Merlot travels very well in the car and he doesn’t bark, nor is he a jumper or climber. He doesn’t need a huge yard, however he does love to run around with his toys and go for walks daily to meet his exercise needs.
