About Sam on hold pending adoption
Sam is on hold pending adoption.
Sam is a beautifully bred 13 month old working line German Shepherd. He was bred to work in a service role but during initial tests it was found he has a fragmentation of bone that has detached from his elbow. Sam is showing no signs of discomfort at the moment and he may never have an issue. However he may develop early onset arthritis in this one joint.
Many shepherds as they age suffer with arthritis and with the right care, exercise and diet they go on to live to a ripe old happy healthy age.
Because he was deemed suitable for the services Sam has had extensive temperament tests, has been well socialised and has already shown he enjoys travelling in a car as well as in a crate in an aircraft. To ensure he had the best diagnosis he was taken to the Sydney University vet hospital and he showed maturity beyond his young age with his ability to ignore other dogs and people and of course unusual goings on that always occur in a busy vet clinic.
Sam is a very friendly social fellow but we would prefer he be the only pet in the family at this stage.
Sam would be a wonderful family member for those who know the breed and who also are able to provide him with mental stimulation. He would benefit greatly from attending obedience classes and would also enjoy moderate exercise every day. He may never show any signs of this elbow problem but over exercising may cause him issues at times .
We are looking for new owners who are well aware of the requirements of caring for a German Shepherd but in turn they will receive ongoing support from GSD Rescue.
Sam may need surgery at a later date but he could go through life showing absolutely no signs and will hopefully live out his life happily and well.
In order for this boy to have the best home and the best ongoing support the new owner will be provided with lifelong support, diet sheet, and an exercise and training program of which all must be adhered to. Sam is too good a dog to be kept in the back yard and not given an appropriate diet and mental stimulation. He needs a job as he is a very intelligent and he must have someone home with him most of the day.
Please do not call if you want a guard dog and you have not had the experience with this wonderful breed. You must be prepared to follow all the guidelines to ensure he is given the best possible chance at a wonderful life. In return you will be showered with love and affection and lifelong loyalty. Please contact Jo if you can offer Sam the best life.
Medical notes
Sam is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated C5 and on heart worm prevention. As explained his x rays on his elbow show a small fragment of bone contained in the joint. At this young age it is not affecting his ability to run and play. A full vet history and report will be provided together with on-going support, dietary advice and training needs.
