About Pencil
Pencil is just as quirky and unique as his name. His real name is actually Todd, but his foster carers daughter nicknamed him Pencil because we recently rescued another chihuahua called Todd, and the nickname Pencil has kind of stuck. The reason it doesn't really matter what we can him is that this sweet old boy is almost fully deaf! He's just so happy to come to anyone who'll give him a cuddle that he doesn't mind what he's called, it's not like he can hear it!
Little Pencil is a gentle soul who likes to potter around. He loves to have cuddles although he can be shy with new people. And just like any man he loves his food! He is quite remarkable that his appetite is so good, as he has no teeth at all due to terrible dental disease from before he was rescued.
Pencil's story is a sad one. He was a puppy farm dog, bred repeatedly with many others. He was rescued by the RSPCA Inspectorate three and a half years ago, and was rehomed through the RSPCA shelter. He was in quite a dreadful state when he was rescued from the puppy farm, but he was so lucky to be adopted by a lovely older man.
Pencil enjoyed three fantastic years in his new home, however tragically his owner had to go into a nursing home where dogs weren't allowed. This is how he found his way to Chihuahua Rescue Qld, and we made the commitment to find him a beautiful forever home to finish his life in.
He is such an easy going boy, and is great in the car. He travels very well and walks well on a leash. Pencil gets along well with the other small dogs in his foster carers home. However he is not a fan of big dogs.
Pencil is good with children who are patient and understanding towards him. (8 years and older). He is currently in a foster home with some lovely children, and he loves them dearly.
Medical notes
All Chihuahua Rescue Queensland dogs have been fully health checked by our vets. We offer a free post-adoption health check with Greencross Vets at Chermside, Jindalee, Browns Plains or Indooroopilly hospitals. This gives you the opportunity to talk directly to the vet about any questions you may have. We provide all veterinary records for each dog, including copies of blood tests, any relevant xrays and medical notes.
All Chihuahua Rescue Queensland dogs are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. We test all our dogs for heart worm and treat them with regular parasite prevention.
Pencil suffered a great deal when he was used as a breeding dog in a puppy farm, and due to this his health was neglected. Pencil lost all his teeth due to dental disease and osteomyelitis has eaten away from of his jaws. This doesn't slow him down, and he loves to eat and enjoys treats. Sadly, none of his teeth were able to be saved and so he is now completely toothless.
Pencil is also deaf.
Adoption details
The first step to adopting a dog from us is to fill out an expression of interest form.
We encourage you to provide as much detail as possible about your family and your home as this helps us make sure we match you with the most suitable dog.
This form can be found at the following address: http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/Kczrs885x4lq3N9u4mQhca
Please note: we do not organise any meet and greet without a completed expression of interest form.
Our adoption process involves:
1) Completing online application form
2) Arranging a meet and greet with the dogs foster carer, after which we ask you to take 24 hours to make a decision about whether you want to adopt this dog
3) A brief home visit and yard check from one of our volunteers
4) Adoption trial spanning four weeks.
We ask that you pay the dogs adoption fee at the beginning of the adoption trial, however this will be refunded if for any reason the dog is not working out in your home within the four week period. We offer a four week adoption trial to make sure that you have plenty of time for your new dog to settle into your home and so we can offer you full support during this period and beyond.
We offer a free health check with our vets at Indooroopilly, Browns Plains, Jindalee or Chermside vet clinic after you’ve adopted your dog and every dog in our care is up to date with all vet work.
We have many dogs that are in foster care and are not yet ready to be listed for a variety of reasons. If you have a good idea of what you are looking for in your new dog please email us at chihuahuarescueqld@gmail.com and let us help you match a dog to your needs.
