About Douglas
"My name is Douglas and I'm hoping you might have room in your heart for an old boy like me? My friends at CRQ tell people that I "radiate joy" whatever that means. I think it has something to do with the kisses I give out, they are well in demand.
I'm a bit deaf (well actually I'm as deaf as they come) but don't worry, it doesn't bother me at all! I can be a bit wobbly on my feet and I had some big surgeries a few months ago, but it hasn't slowed me down.
If you'll give me a chance, I promise I'll give you total devotion - just look into my eyes and you'll see.... you're my world!"
Douglas came into care from the RSPCA Wacol Shelter. He was an old boy with many health problems, but we have a passion for the golden oldies and we were very happy to meet him.
Dougie has not a single tooth left in his mouth, and it leaves his tongue hanging right out. However, we think it adds to his goofy smile and just gives him even more charm. Dougie is such a happy go lucky dog, nothing seems to wipe that smile off his face.
Dougie gets on with literally everyone he meets. He is used to living with cats and other dogs, including a few feisty dogs! Nothing puts Dougie off, he just loves to give out kisses and wag his tail.
Little Douglas loves his food and has been known to steal a few peanut butter sandwiches. He makes up for his lack of hearing with good eye sight and impeccable sense of smell.
Douglas is great with kids (and loud family noises will never bother him at all!) and despite his arthritis, he loves to be part of the action.
Unfortunately Doug does suffer some separation anxiety, which is made worse by his lack of hearing. He definitely needs a home where he will have a lot of human companionship. Dougie tends to cry when his carer leaves him, and being deaf he has no sense of his own volume. Unfortunately many deaf dogs can be quite loud.
He loves to potter around the garden, and sits on his foster carers balcony watching the birds and feeling the cool breezes. Like many older dogs, his face may be white but his heart is pure gold.
Medical notes
All Chihuahua Rescue Queensland dogs have been fully health checked by our vets. We offer a free post-adoption health check with Greencross Vets at Chermside, Browns Plains, Jindalee or Indooroopilly hospitals. This gives you the opportunity to talk directly to the vet about any questions you may have. We provide all veterinary records for each dog, including copies of blood tests, any relevant xrays and medical notes.
All Chihuahua Rescue Queensland dogs are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. We test all our dogs for heart worm and treat them with regular parasite prevention.
Dougie has been diagnosed with Cushings Syndrome, a condition where his adrenal glands overproduce cortisol. This condition is managed with medication, given orally each day. He takes his medication well and will require this medication for the rest of his life. The Trilostane medication costs about $15 per week.
Douglas has a condition that is common in Chihuahuas - called luxating patellas where his knee caps continually slip out of place. He required surgery whilst in our care and has recovered well. Although he is an older dog, we chose to do surgery to stabilise his back leg that was badly affected by the luxating patella and causing a great deal of pain. This added stability has really improved his life. Dougie does have arthritis, however a good diet and joint supplements will help to keep him comfortable.
Adoption details
The first step to adopting a dog from us is to fill out an expression of interest form.
We encourage you to provide as much detail as possible about your family and your home as this helps us make sure we match you with the most suitable dog.
This form can be found at the following address: http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/Kczrs885x4lq3N9u4mQhca
Please note: we do not organise any meet and greet without a completed expression of interest form.
Our adoption process involves:
1) Completing online application form
2) Arranging a meet and greet with the dogs foster carer, after which we ask you to take 24 hours to make a decision about whether you want to adopt this dog
3) A brief home visit and yard check from one of our volunteers
4) Adoption trial spanning four weeks.
We ask that you pay the dogs adoption fee at the beginning of the adoption trial, however this will be refunded if for any reason the dog is not working out in your home within the four week period. We offer a four week adoption trial to make sure that you have plenty of time for your new dog to settle into your home and so we can offer you full support during this period and beyond.
We offer a free health check with our vets at Indooroopilly, Browns Plains, Jindalee or Chermside vet clinic after you’ve adopted your dog and every dog in our care is up to date with all vet work.
We have many dogs that are in foster care and are not yet ready to be listed for a variety of reasons. If you have a good idea of what you are looking for in your new dog please email us at chihuahuarescueqld@gmail.com and let us help you match a dog to your needs.
