About Otis - Special Needs
This guy is going to be the best buddy you ever had!
Otis is a mild mannered, soft natured young boy, and at 7-9mnths old, is only now getting to know what a cuddle is. He is a little bit leggy, and still has a bit of growing to do!
Otis is very special, because he also happens to be deaf.
This has not stopped him from getting to know his 2 cat brothers and his new foster parents. He is just love at first sight!
He has already grasped 3 hand signals and responds well to positive rewards (ear rubs!) (and the occasional treat too 😉)
Because Otis is deaf he is very in tune to body language and will become very close and responsive to his new parent/s. Due to this, we are very keen to find him his perfect forever home asap, so he can learn signals and commands, suited to his forever home/family.
His perfect fit will be willing to be consistent and routine with Otis. Things such as feeding times, in his bowl, in his spot, etc, will help him to navigate life as easily as possible.
Otis does not have a big appetite and snoozes most of the day. He is not a super energetic boy, and a daily stroll will be enough to keep him happy!
His is quite good on the lead, a harness lead is recommended for Otis. He has not quite mastered doggy body language yet, but he is not aggressive towards any other dogs, and is doing his best to communicate with them!
Otis can not be off his lead, understandably but ht is good at remaining in eye shot when off the lead in an safe, enclosed area.
He is just a big softie looking for his fit.
Otis is very smart and has responded well to his training thus far. I am happy teach signals we have learned, feel free to make your own, as long as they are: consistent, simple and able to be seen from a relative distance.
Otis will love you more that liver treats every day of his life. He will be your constant companion and a really big part of you home. He will however be a serious commitment so please be sure you have researched deafness in dogs and are confident that you have the necessary skills to manage a special needs dog!
Otis adorably collects a souvenir of each family member to take to bed with him where he sleeps. This is often next to our bed. He also is happy wherever he happens to be sleepy!
Welcoming a deaf dog into your family isn't for everyone, but if you have the time and commitment, to properly train them, they can be the most wonderful, loyal and attentive pets. Otis copes extremely well with his disability and with the right guidance, he will make the most beautiful family member!
Otis is in care in Port Melbourne.
Medical notes
Otis is deaf.
He goes to his new home desexed, microchipped, flea and worm treated and current in vaccinations.
