Shilo ~ Staffy x Ridgeback (trial 6/12/15)

Introducing Shilo, a gorgeous tan and white Staffy/Ridgeback cross who is approximately 2-3 years of age. She had a rough start in life, being caged in a puppy farm having litters of puppies for her owners before being rescued. Despite this she is not scared of people, but she is wary of sudden movements and loud noises.

Shilo has a quiet nature and calm personality. She is not demanding in any way. She has excellent table manners, never eating from another dog’s bowl and she shows no signs of food aggression or guarding. She eats treats gently from our hands.

She rarely barks and therefore would make a great companion for owners with neighbours close by. She is neither a jumper nor a digger, and doesn’t appear interested in escaping.

Shiloh has met cats and didn't react to them at all. She does not seem to be bothered by local birds either eg: kookaburras, cockatoos or magpies.

Shilo came to us quite underweight at 26kg with ribs showing, and therefore has not been walked much in an endeavour to build up her body size. However, she does walk really well on the harness and lead, but is skittish of unfamiliar sounds. She has behaved beautifully at the vets, when being groomed, and also before and after her operation. She was scared of getting in the car at first and we had to lift her in, but now she jumps up willingly with only a gentle tug on her lead.

Shilo likes to spend time both inside and outside, so she is fairly flexible. We like for all our dogs to be allowed to have at least some time inside with their families.

Shilo would be equally happy as an only dog, given plenty of love and attention, but wouldn’t mind sharing the love with other dogs in the home. She currently lives in a household with two senior dogs, and gets along with them. She is a placid dog, and has been well-behaved when meeting other dogs of all sizes. She is submissive by nature, and stands still in new social circumstances. I have seen her playing with a younger smaller dog and it was delightful to see her enjoying herself.

Shilo doesn’t appear to be bothered by children and was fine when she spent the day with two active young boys. We are a childless home but when our 2 y.o grandson visits we give Shilo lots of space due to her timid nature and rough treatment in the past. She would be suitable to older children or younger children if they are used to big dogs and will listen when told not to annoy a dog.

Shilo is looking for a permanent home. At the moment, she is in foster care with a working couple, so she is often left at home for 8 hours at a time. There is access to the inside/outside via a doggy door so she is free to wander around as she pleases. She goes up and down stairs to reach the yard from the deck.

Shilo will require patience and understanding to overcome her low expectations of life. She has had no formal training yet, and does not know how to sit when asked. She is totally toilet trained and has never toileted inside our house. She comes for dinner when called, and waits patiently for her turn. She sleeps quietly in her bed all night. She appears to be quite a lounge lizard which is very comforting at night-time.
