~HARRY'S STORY~

Imagine waking up in a cold confined kennel and wanting nothing more than to just feel a sense of being loved and wanted. Waking up to the same four walls the same barks and cries you have heard day after day and hoping that today will be the day someone looks at you and promises to give you a better life.

For almost 650 nights Harry has laid his head down in his kennel and hoped for a better day when he wakes. 650 days. 650 days people have walked past Harry and chosen another dog instead. 650 days Harry has seen other lucky animals come and go and has been left behind through no fault of his own. When we lock the shelter at night we tell him that his turn will come soon but he doesn't seem to believe us anymore.

So what IS so amazing about Harry that people just don't see straight away?
Harry's cutest habits are when he leans his whole body against you requesting a back rub or when we catch him in his bed after a play date stretched out on his back with those long legs up in the air!

Admittedly Harry isn't the smartest tool in the shed so to speak but it makes us love him even more with such a dopey lovable and goofy personality. As he can be such a boisterous kid himself we have recommended no young kids in his household so he doesn't accidently bowl them over! He adores other dogs but a little TOO much and has been returned for this reason. Unfortunately Harry doesn't have an 'off' button sometimes when it comes to his canine friends so he needs to be an only pet in the household and can have doggy playmates outside the home.

He has a little dance he likes to do for staff by stamping his legs repeatedly getting all excited. Some days his head starts to tilt to one side and after numerous tests we have had unremarkable results. Staff members refer to his quirky ways now as the 'Happy Harry Syndrome'. For a definitive diagnosis of the cause behind Harry's head tilt advanced imaging such as MRI or CT would be required. Having spent close to 2 years in care all clinical signs have remained stable and Harry is more than ready to find his new home.

We all spoil and love every animal in our care but if we are being honest Harry is definitely a stand out to all staff and volunteers at AWL.
