About Iona Star ~ Beach babe! (adopted 5/2016)
Introducing Iona Star, a 1.5 year old mixed breed beauty. Iona's breed mix is a bit of a guess - we were told she is a Mastiff x Wolfhound with a bit of Shar-Pei thrown in. As you can see from her photos – she is stunning! Iona Star loves her family - she is in foster care with three children aged 18 months, 4 years and 13 years. She gets on well with children - she sometimes will knock them a little bit when playing but it’s all accidental as she really is just a gentle sweet soul.
Iona Star adores other dogs - she has great doggy social skills so she loves to have other dogs around. Iona is quite shy when meeting new people so she having other dogs around makes her feel more confident. For this reason we would like Iona Star to be adopted by a family with a friendly dog already, or who have friends with friendly dogs that she can play with, who will help her to continue to grow her confidence. Iona is in foster care with cats, she is curious about them but not in a mean way. If they run she will trot after them with curiosity. If introductions were done well, she would probably integrate quite well with a dog friendly cat. She is in foster care with rabbits and guinea pigs, and chickens in a separate yard and she pays them no attention.
Misty absolutely loves the beach and going swimming so if you live near a dog friendly beach or a lake she will happily join you on swims there.
Iona Star is used to sleeping in a kennel outside with her sister Misty Star (who is also available for adoption). Iona is quite content to be an inside and outside dog -she would love a family who will allow her inside for family time and who will take time to continue her house training. Iona Star has basic training and she enjoys her walks and walks well on a lead.
Iona has been mistreated and needs time to gain confidence with new surroundings and new people, despite this set back she has learnt to trust her foster family and once she understands you mean her no harm she will be your very best friend. She does love to have her new family around her and is best suited to a family who will spend time playing with her and socialisation her. She used to find cars daunting, but she has learnt that travelling in the car opens up a whole new world of safe adventures for her.
Iona Star will suit an active couple of any age or family with older children who can give her attention and continue to help her trust the world. She thrives on your affection and loves pats once she realises you are her friend. We would prefer her to have companionship and not be left all day. Iona Star is in foster care with 5-6 foot fencing and she doesn't try to jump it as she loves being a homebody with her family.

Medical notes
When Iona Star and her sister Misty Star first came into foster care they had suffered demodectic mange (not contagious) for a long time. Iona Star received mange medication and treatment, her immune system has recovered and she is now happy and healthy. Iona Star will need to remain on a continued nutritious diet to keep her immune system healthy. We are looking for a furever family who will commit to feeding her a nutritious and varied diet (all ingredients you can buy from your local supermarket) as advised by her foster carer. Dogs who have had demodectic mange cannot stay healthy on regular packaged dog food and will relapse so a nutritious diet is vitally important to their ongoing health.
Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can answer your questions and will ask you about the sort of home you are offering and may ask you to fill in our Adoption Questionnaire http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.docx
(2) If the questionnaire is approved you can arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. We will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
