These girls are so eager to please. They thrive and are happiest when they have human company, but have each other should their human not be around. However they do not do well left alone for extended periods of time. Not suitable for a full time worker as they need human company. They are social dogs and need human comany. Frequent socialisation with other dogs and stimulation through walks, games, training or work for food games will also keep these girl enriched and prevent boredom. The girls love to play and nothing gets them more excited the playing squeeky go fetch in the garden or playing chasey.
Can be a little unsure of new people but seem to gain trust quickly. Once you have that they will love you and dote on you non stop. They will want to be with the family, wherever that may be, they won't get underfoot but like to be in their basket where you are or snuggling up next to you on the couch.
We are a pair and are very reliant on each other. We will not be separated so please don't ask.
Not suitable as "outdoor" dogs. We will only consider those homes who want a Shihtzu as an indoor family member. This goes for during the day while your at work as well. Currently sleeping in the lounge in their basket house, very rare for any night time accidents. They both settle and sleep well and don't wake up too early.
Currently living with other small dogs and they all get on very well even with my furry guests who may only visit for a few nights.
All dogs are fed individually so I know who has eaten what, I would recommend continuing this as they both like stealing food from the other.
Ideal companions for individuals/couples who work from home/part time, retired, or can come home during the day. Families with children teenagers and older who have grown up with small dogs/won't rough handle them.
Fully toilet trained. Will use a doggy door if flap open or half way closed.
Further obedience training and lead training recommended.
Experience with owning a shitzu or similar long haired dog would be an advantage but not a necessity as long as there is an understanding and commitment of their specific ongoing requirements. Shihtzu's are low shedding dogs which means less vacuuming! But, it also means their hair grows like human hair, and it will need haircuts. Ideally be professionally groomed every 4-6 weeks. Additionally regular brushing at home on a daily or every second day basis is necessary especially when they have a full coat in winter. If you are lacking time and money, the girls may not be the right breed for you.
Secure fencing an absolute necessity. There is potential to dig or chew should inadequate stimulation, exercise or attention be provided.
Requiring a little more maintenance than your standard short hair dog is worth the effort for what you will get in return from these adorable irresistible bundles of fur.
