Jet ~ Senior Red Kelpie (trial 5.11.15)

Hi there! I'm Jet and I’m a gorgeous 9 year old red kelpie. I’m just like a great wine as age has matured me so I’m quite a gentleman, and I’m a very suave too. I love life and adore my humans, my favourite place is to be by your side. If you’re looking for a companion dog then I’m your guy as I love you – plain and simple!

Whether you want to watch TV, go for a walk or just hang out in the yard – I’m there! I’m pretty helpful in that way - keeping you company is my specialty. Do you have woes from a tough day? I’m happy to sit with you and hear all about them.

I love it when you throw balls for me to catch, I’m pretty good at it if I say so myself. I’ll leap into the air and make you laugh as I’m quite acrobatic. If you throw the ball for me I’ll be one extremely happy dude, and then when you’re ready for a rest, I’ll sit by your side and we can just hang out.

At 35 kilos I’m very big for a kelpie. I’m a rotund boy, who probably needs to lose a little bit off my waistline, but I figure winter’s here so I can afford to store a little extra weight to see through the winter, right? I'm treat and reward focused so I respond well if you bribe me with treats (we all know food is the way to a man's heart, yes?) If you want an exercise buddy, then I’m happy to walk as far as you want. I’d even be in for a light jog if you want to do some laps around the park with me by your side. I'm still learning to walk gently on a lead as I find all the smells so exciting when we're out. With a daily walk and routine I settle into a good pace once my initial excitement wears off.

I used to sleep on the floor of the bedroom with my old owners, and I was happiest there. But if you would like me sleep in the lounge then I’m OK with that. I don’t like to sleep outside on my own as it’s too cold out there. I’ve spent my life as a loyal companion by my original owners’ side, so I really like to be inside with my humans at night too.

In my old home I got upset when a toddler pulled my tail hard so even though I love people of all ages, I need a home where the children understand that having my tail pulled is not fun for me. For this reason I’m best suited to a family with children over 12 years who will be loving and respectful with me. I love meeting new people, and I’m keen to join you on outings where I get to say hi and meet others.

I’m very clever (we kelpies are known for our intelligence, eagerness to please and debonair good looks) and I know how to Sit, Lay Down, Come and I have good recall off-lead once I get to know you. I am toilet trained and I’ll hold on if you go out during the day and leave me inside. I’m past the destructive puppy stage so I would be an OK apartment or townhouse dog as I won’t trash the place when you go out like those young puppies will! I’m used to 4.5-5 foot fencing and I don’t jump the fence as I just want to be with you. I suit small acreage if you are on property with dog mesh fencing - that would give me room to play and explore the land. I’m certainly not a working dog, though as I’m too used to my luxuries!

I would suit a forever home where there is someone home a lot to keep me company, or if you work from home that’s even better. I wouldn’t suit a home where I was left in the yard for long hours as I would feel lonely and fret for you. I get on well with other dogs – both large and small, but to be honest I’m more of a person’s dog. Even though I’ve been in foster care with other dogs I’d rather just hang with my people.
