About Bella (on trial 18/12/14) ~ beautiful blind girl
Wanted: Seeing eye humans for blind dog. We are seeking a special family for Bella. Bella is a 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier and she just happens to have been born blind. Bella doesn’t need too much special attention – just understanding. \ She has fit in really well in my household over the last few weeks. She learns where she can and can’t walk and sometimes follows me around or one of the other dogs. She’ll just sit listening to the world, curl up for a sleep next to my foot or find a toy for a play (toys that make noise are best – such as cat toys that make a crinkly sound or squeaky toys). She is an extremely happy, gentle, clever lady.
She would be fine children 12 years plus. She would be happy to live with small to medium dogs, but not cats. I feel that her perfect home would have 1 to 2 other small to medium sized dog/s that are calm, friendly, and don't mind another dog in their personal space and love a good wrestle. \ It would take a special dog to be her buddy as she does play in a special way with lots of play biting, kisses, sniffs, growls and some other very “Bella” moves.
Bella is a very sociable little lady and loves to be around people as well as other dogs. She cuddles up on your lap or likes a bit of a play. \ You really wouldn’t know that she’s blind. She lives a normal doggy life running around the backyard and playing. She listens intently to every noise as she sniffs her way around.
Bella’s version of fetch: you throw ball, another dog chases it, Bella chases the other dog, other dog gets ball, Bella tackles other dog, other dog brings ball back, then we’re ready to do it all again. It’s fetch but just a bit different!
She sleeps in her own bed of a night and goes to bed well. She is pretty much toilet trained but will have a few accidents settling in.
Bella barks at people she does not recognise until she sniffs them but then she is fine. She is a friendly little dog. When she is unsure of something she will let out a light growl and I know to give her some reassuring words or stop annoying her. Despite the growl and perhaps a play bite, she would never bite with intent to hurt. It’s a way of her communicating her insecurity and compensating for her lack of sight. Anything outside of her norm she is afraid of really so car rides, new places, new animals etc. but she does get used to things and adapts really well.
Bella will not be able to be walked out in public, she will not travel well and she will need a consistent home with a decent sized QUIET backyard (not front yard) and also be able to be inside a lot as well. It will take her a few weeks to settle in with other dogs as she works out her relationships in a unique and cautious way. She communicates a bit differently to your normal dog. My dog has accepted this well after a few days and I think knows Bella is blind so is very accepting. \ They are now best buddies only after a few weeks. As I write this, I saw Bella sneak over to my dog, steal her toy and then run off fast as lightening so like I said, she is a normal dog.
Bella has 3 great loves in life: a wrestle with another dog, a cuddle with a human and a bone to chew on.
She is a great little friend to have around me and my other dogs. Loyal, loving, smart (big time) and happy – pretty much a perfect little lady. I would love to hear from people who think they can provide a loving home for this little firecracker.
