About Penny ~ Special Needs ~ On Trial 13/12/14
Penny is a sweet and petite 6 month old border collie x puppy. Penny loves to please you and she has gorgeous big eyes that are constantly looking to you as though she is telling you that she is a good girl. She loves to wear a big puppy smile as she follows you around the house and yard checking out what you are up to.
Penny is very shy and she will wiggle in as close to you as possible and hide her face in your lap. She also loves to put her paws around you and cuddle your waist as whilst hiding her head. Penny has had a very horrible start to life, so she can be timid and submissive when first meeting people, but once she realises that they are friendly she will warm up with a big smile and wagging tail. She wins over everyone she meets with her gentle and sweet nature.
Penny is in foster care with two other dogs big and small and she adores them both. She loves to play with them, but she knows how to entertain herself playing with soft toys or bouncing balls too. She will pick a teddy out of her toy box (the yellow teddy is her favourite!) and she will prance around the house playing with it. Penny is in foster care with 5 cats and she gets on very well with them, she loves to walk around the house with them and particularly loves the cats who will wrap themselves around her legs and purr. \ If the cats swat her she will walk away and give them space – she knows that cats are boss!
When you get home she is so happy to see you – she will run loops and her tail will wag like crazy. Although Penny is very young she is not destructive like some pups, she doesn’t wreck her toys, furniture or dig up plants or the garden. She isn’t a jumper or climber (although she does like to stand on the outdoor table and survey the backyard from the high perch!). Penny is very obedient and will come when called. When let off leash in a large fenced area she will zoom back to you and sit at your feet for a treat when you call her name. She will happily accept treats and pats all day long if they are on offer.
Penny loves her daily walks and walks well on a lead – she gets a short walk in the morning and a long walk at night and she is happy to trot along for whatever distance you go for. She also loves to run beside you so she would do well with a family who want a jogging partner. Penny loves outdoor activities and would thrive in dog sports like agility or fly ball.
Before Penny came into care she had had no socialisation at all. She can get easily overexcited and bark when there is a lot of activity going on around her. If left alone she won’t bark, it’s only when there is something very exciting going on. Although she likes other dogs and is best suited with doggy friends, she can get overstimulated when meeting other dogs the first time around and she’ll bark at them. Once she gets to know them she gets on well. For this reason, Penny will be best suited to a family who understands the rough start she has had in life and who will continue her training and ongoing socialisation. Penny is best suited to a family with another friendly playful dog who can help her with this socialisation and who is a positive role model for her to follow. Without another dog, Penny may regress in her training.
Penny must be allowed inside with her family when they are home - she is very family focused and therefore loves to be with her humans for family time. Penny sleeps the whole night on a dog-bed in the kitchen or on the lounge, so her furever home will be one where she continues to sleep inside.

Medical notes
When Penny came into foster care she had very bad skin allergies. She was riddled with fleas and had bald patches on her sides, face, belly and legs from pulling out her hair and scratching. She is currently on a fish based diet (“Holistic” brand meat/dairy/grain free dry food available from Petbarn) and a cortisteroid tablet each night to lesson her skin allergy symptoms. Her hair has been growing back and her skin is no longer raw. Penny’s furever family will need to continue her on this special needs diet – taking care to only slowly start introducing other safe foods (eg cheese which she loves) over time. Over time her cortisteroid medication can be reduced and she can be weaned off.
Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can answer your questions and will ask you about the sort of home you are offering and may ask you to fill in our Adoption Questionnaire http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.rtf.
(2) If the questionnaire is approved you can arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. We will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
