Samantha (On Trial 4/4/14)

She is tall, elegant, and looks great in pink! Her name is Samantha and she is a beautiful 4 year old, white, standard poodle. Samantha has been living at my home for almost three weeks and I have found her to be a lovely dog; affectionate and gentle. She is a perfect house guest; clean and fully house trained and not at all destructive in the house. When my grandchildren visit, she has been tolerant and patient with them. I do not know if she gets along with cats because I don’t have any.

Samantha doesn't have a mean or aggressive bone in her body. However she has not been well socialised with other dogs so it takes a her a while to get used to and become friends with them. Once she realises they are friends she becomes very playful, running around with them. Sam is currently living with two poodles, a female toy and a male standard and, after the initial settling in period, there have not been any issues.

Sam is an inside dog with access to the yard via a doggy door and she sleeps inside. She is happiest when she is close to her human family. She would also enjoy a playful dog similar in size to play with. She would also cope as an only dog if exercised and given plenty of attention. Sam does not have any separation issues and would cope in a family where the members go to work or school provided she was exercised and given lots of attention when the family return.

Samantha loves going for walks. She tends to pull on leash when we first set off, but this gradually settles down and she walks nicely. She is also inclined to bark and lunge toward other dogs but this will settle down with frequent exercise and as she becomes accustomed to seeing other dogs. Sam would be ideal for an active family who enjoys exercise, as she would make a perfect jogging companion. True to her breed she is very smart and after some further basic training would be ideal for Obedience and/or Agility work or other dog sports. She comes when called and sits when asked.

Sam has a hearty appetite and enjoys her food and treats, chicken wings are her favourite – I have never seen a chicken wing disappear so fast! Although she fought with my standard poodle over a chicken wing (and won) Sam has displayed no other sign of food aggression while she has been in my care.

Sam has a non shedding coat that needs to be clipped every 8 weeks or so costing between $80 to $100. So you need to be prepared for this if you want a poodle. She also needs bathing every couple of weeks and brushing every day or so, depending on length to keep her comfortable and looking her best.
