About Dewey
When Dewey came from the Pound he was found to be limping on one side quite badly and, when x-rays were done, Dewey was found to have an irregular right hip joint. There may have been trauma to the femoral head and pelvis that was not treated promptly, or he may have had a condition called avascular necrosis of the femoral head, in which case an irregular blood supply to the hip causes the top of the femur to die and erode. Both issues require him to have a femoral head and neck osteotomy (removal of the ball part of the ball and socket joint). Because there is also evidence of pelvic issues (his sacroiliac joint is irregular) it's quite likely he suffered some trauma to his pelvis. Dewey's left hock (ankle) is able to be hyper extended, most likely due to damage to the connective tissues and support structures (ligaments and tendons) and he may need to have further surgery on his ankle where it is fused so that he can bear weight more easily on his left leg.
UPDATE 25 JUNE: On Monday 23 June Dewey made his way up to Newcastle for surgery that was performed by Dr Simon Whitaker. The surgery was successful and, once he has recovered from it, Dewey will be pain free. He is confined during the day at present but can go for a little wander around the house and garden when his foster carer returns from work. Two weeks on from the surgery, Dewey will be free to go wherever he likes, to climb stairs and to begin his physiotherapy and short walks. Dewey will be ready for rehoming in mid to late August once he has fully recovered.
Medical notes
Dewey will need expensive surgery to correct both of these issues but then he will go on to have a normal life and, most importantly, he will be out of pain. Dewey's surgery will be done by Dr Simon Whittaker in Newcastle. Donations to help us help Dewey would be most welcome!
