Puppy Maddie (On Trial 19/6/14)

Maddie is a 6 month old kelpie x staffy puppy. She is the smallest of the litter, yet a little girl with a huge heart and full of fight. We were unsure if little Maddie would even survive after a rough start but she is a determined little girl who refused to give up. She currently weighs 7.5 kilos with a lot more growing to do.

Maddie loves human company. When going for a walk Maddie is right at your side, if she wanders off to explore, she stays in sight and is excited to hear her name, and comes bounding back without fail. She likes other dogs, but she prefers people. She is hesitant meeting new dogs, yet is also interested in meeting them and wants to play. If dominated or rough housed she lays down, crying and waiting to be helped as she did not have the strength in the past to stand up for herself she maintains this submissive character. She would therefore be suited to a playmate that is fun, yet respectful of her space and doesn't overly dominate or push other dogs around, especially at teatime as she will step away surrendering all meals if asked to.

Although Maddie prefers a human lap to playtime with her sisters and friends I think she would benefit from the company of an friendly older dog to ensure that she learns good dog to dog interactions. If she is an only dog she would be suited to an owner that is able to spend a lot of time with her as she has grown to love human affection and company after being nursed to health.

Maddie sleeps with her sisters at night in a large pen and therefore I believe would accept crate training. She already looks for ways to get out of the yard by climbing the fencing if I am walking away to leave her and is likely to grow into a big sized dog so will need good fencing to ensure she does not outgrow the fences.

Maddie has had very basic training and is learning not to jump in excitement, to not mouth with those sharp little teeth, to come when called, and to stay when told to stay outside when we are entering the house. Maddie, like all puppies, will need further training on lead and in regard to toilet training and would benefit from an owner that has experience in puppy raising. Maddie ignores our kitten and rabbit unless her sisters lead a chase, but even then can be easily called off. She is not a big barker, yet occasionally barks at the horses, again responsive to her name and stops when called.
