About Melba and Angelcake
AngelCake (lighter girl) and Melba (darker girl) were born at the shelter, after their pregnant mum was rescued from death row at a pound. They are very sweet girls in every way. and have a satin coat. This is very unusual in guinea pigs, especially as their mum was not a satin herself. As you might be able to tell slightly from the photos, their fur glows and shines better than in any shampoo commercial. Sadly, it is also one of the reasons theirs is not a normal rehoming case. You see, almost all satin guinea pigs carry the gene for osteodystrophy, causing an early decline at 18 months - 3 years. As if this was not devastating enough, Melba also suffered from a seizure when she left the shelter to go on foster care after weaning. Whether the stress of a new environment, or the heat of the day, we don't really know what caused it. She has fully recovered and not had a seizure since, but these girls are not 100% healthy. The main thing at the end of the day is that they're happy, but we do not know how long their lives will be, nor any problems that might come in the future as a result of their unique genes. For this reason, the girls are listed on our website in case there is the perfect home willing to love them despite this knowledge. However, if such a home does not come along, these girls will remain within the rescue family, spending each day with as much love and fun as possible.
If you are interested in these girls, please be prepared for a lengthy adoption process. We will only see them rehomed if we are certain it is the best thing for them, as their welfare is our number one priority.
