Chloe (Adopted 14/3/14)

Chloe is a stunning, purebred German Shepherd, 3 years old. She likes to play, especially fetch. She has good basic training and is good with children. She has amazing potential but needs a home with someone who will not only love her but also continue with her training.

When Chloe arrived into foster care she was quite overweight due to lack of exercise. She had anxiety issues especially if she was spoken to in a loud voice or anticipated she may be hit. Chloe also reacted with fear aggression when on leash and strange dogs came near. Chloe has been receiving training in foster care for an extended period to allow time to address her issues.

Chloe has been attending dog club classes since nearly 3 months. If there are not too many distractions she is now good at “sit”, “stay” and “down”. She will sit and stay, until I give her the command of “OK” when I place her food out. I can walk the length of my backyard away from Chloe and around the corner, out of sight and she will stay and wait. She happily plays fetch, enjoys being groomed and is much better when being walked and has improved greatly when other strange dogs come near whilst out walking. I have not let her off lead yet because I doubt that the “come” command is strong enough yet to call her back if she feels threatened by another dog and runs towards them. No longer does she flinch when a hand is waved near her.

My Grandchildren, aged from 2 to 10 years old, happily play with Chloe, but under supervision. Not because I am worried about Chloe attacking for no reason, but as she is a big dog, at 35 kilos and can unintentionally hurt younger children when running around.

I have never seen Chloe’s reaction to a cat, but she does bark at birds.

Chloe has a choice of areas where she can go to sleep. On a hot night, she will lie outside on the grass. On an average night, she will lie on her bed in my rumpus room, or on a cooler night, she will lie on the towel placed out for her in the lounge room. Chloe has the run of the house and mainly just wants to lie down where she can see me. At the time of writing this profile, Chloe is only three feet away from me with a toy in her mouth, waiting to go out and play fetch. If I am working out in my garage, there is a mat for Chloe to lie on where I am in her line of sight. She must continue to be allowed to be inside in her new home when people are home.

I am sorry that I can’t write a flowery description saying that Chloe is a perfect dog. To me, she is still a work in progress. When Chloe is adopted, I hope that she will go to a family who will be able to appreciate her past and who are capable of continuing to improve her future.

Chloe's birthday is 23/09/2010. She was surrendered by her owner who reluctantly couldn't keep her.
